Are 4runner axle housings the same from 96-02?

I have an e-locker rear third and housing from a 97 4runner. One of my buddies wants to convert his 2wd 2000 4runner over to an elocker but I'm not 100% sure that the housings are the same.
We would need to run his axle/backing plates and bearings in the elocker housing, but I've heard that in 2000 they went with a thicker rear wheel bearing. I'm assuming that that just affects the bearing pocket or just axle shaft, but am not sure. Anyone come across this before?
