4runner Auto Up/Down windows

I remember seeing posts on this but everything I found searching didn't really answer my questions. I've got a '98 4runner that has driver's side auto down only. Awhile back I got a driver's master switch for a later year 3rd gen 4runner with auto options for front L+R windows and I think the connector was slightly different so I wasn't able to plug it in fully without slight modification. I thought I read at that time that it wasn't the switch that operated the auto up/down but the regulator or motor. Does anyone have any insight on this? Would I need the switch, regulator/motor, and possibly wiring harness or am I over thinking this?

It's almost time to replace my front regulators so I'm exploring options for bettering my 4runner since I'll be getting new parts anyway. Thoughts?

I do not know if it has something to do with the regulator. however, there was a change in both the LH & RH regulator part numbers in mid 1998.
RH 1996 to mid 1998: 85710-35100 and from mid 1998 onwards, 85710-35150.
LH 1996 to mid 1998: 85720-35050 and from mid 1998 onwards, 85720-35110.

A friend of mine told me that it is controlled by the switch, not by the regulator-motor because according to him, he has done a swap of the switch and it worked.

This was my understanding as well, heard you can install auto switches for all 4 windows.

The change must have been the shape of the connector possibly as I remember trying to plug in and there was an extra piece of plastic on the switch side that kept me from plugging it in. I've since lost or possibly sold that switch so I'll get a new one and see what happens. Thanks for the info, I'll let you all know if the switch swap works.
