4cyl parts, V6 truck?
I just bought an 89 extended cab with a V6. Something is kind of odd with this vehicle. It has 4cyl gears in it(G292), base cluster, manual hubs, no A/C, no sliding glass window, no cruise or power anything. Usually all the V6 trucks come with something and everyone I have seen had the deluxe gauges. Any info on this? Do I have a freak from the factory? Don't get me wrong, I'am glad it has manual locking hubs and no A/C but it stuck me kind of odd.

I'm sure it was just optioned out that way.
My 4Runner says it has 4cy gears when in fact, it does have 6cy gears. I've heard this is quite common for some reason.

You could buy a deluxe with V6 - there are lots of em. This has base gauges (only SR5s of that vintage got the good gauges.) AC and power and cruise and intermittent wipers and all that stuff were options. Sounds like you got a plain jane deluxe V6. Except the "4cyl gears" claim - I don't understand that one. 4 cyl gears would mean a 4cyl axle, not the ratio. Ratios were bases on tire size and transmission - had nothing to do with engine choice.

according to this site..... the g292 has nothing to do with being a 4 cylinder or a 6 cylinder... in its breakdown you have a G = 8.0" All 4x4 4Runners and Pickups, 29 = 4.100 Gear Ratio Very common, 2 = 2 Pinions Common in 4 cylinder models, but has been used in some V6 models
that doenst mean you have a 4cyl third member in your truck... the third member has nothing to do with the way your gears are... it has something to do with a crsh sleeve or something liek that.....

So what I need to determine is if I have a 4 or 6cyl third member so in the future I know what gears to buy

I believe you can tell the difference between the 4cyl and V6 third members just by looking actually.
The one in the background is V6, foreground is 4cyl. (Count the gussets.)

That gear code says that he has a 2 pinion third member. THe 2 pinion 3rd member was used on 4cy trucks. The carrier is a different design on the 2 and 4 pinion 3rd members, along with the pinion and bearings.
As does SRV's truck, my truck has a gear code that says I have a 2 pinion rear end. I do infact have a 4 pinion rear end. So the code is dead wrong.
