!!4 Wheel Drive Question!!
I hope this isnt a stupid question but I have a quick 4 wheel drive question.
I have a 99 limited. I know you can put your rig in 4 lo from a stop but can you put your rig in 4 hi from a stop?
I have this question because I usually leave my car in 2 wheel drive, but then one morning I will wake up and there is foot of snow on the ground. Is the only way to get it in 4 hi is to drive it into 4hi?
Thanks in advanced.

It should engage a few feet after you start rolling. If it doesn't you might have a problem. Just put it in 4Hi pull foward and you should here a slight click and the green light indicator for your 4wd should light up.

4runner are supposed to be able to shift "on the fly", which means you can even shift into 4hi while you're moving.
Mine however seems broken, so I can only shift into 4wd when I am in park.

If you pull it into 4 high from a stop it may or may not engage right away. If the splines are lined up in the front locking collar it will go in right away. If not it will as soon as you start to roll forward just a bit. As soon as the dash light is on it is fully engaged.

I noticed that too. Sometimes it will go into 4HI right away from a stop, other times I have to roll forward just a tad-not even a few feet- just get the wheels to move a bit and it goes right into 4HI.
You want fun? Try and put the Xterra into 4HI or back to 2HI!

ease off guys
the Toyota shift on the fly is a vacume system (at least on my 92) so it lockes in much better/faster if you lett of off the gas for a second. Try it and let me know how it works for you.

I got a chance to test this weekend. Figured it out. From a stop, if I press the 4 hi button the lights flash and engages on the spot when I shift into Neutral. Shift back into drive and Im off. Dont have to roll or drive a certain distance for it to engage.
Thanks for all your help.
