Hi, I'm new to this. I bought a 92 surf ssrx, first 4 wheel drive I ever owned. Problem is, there is a button on the shifter that says 4 wheel, when it is depressed ypu can hear a relay being switched, however there is no light on the dash to show 4 wheel. Normally i drive with the shifter on 4h position and the switch off. If the shifter is on 4l, the 4 wheels are engaged. There are still no light to show and I don't know what the switch is for. Also, does the surf have automatic locking doors that engage when the vehicle is in motion? I have power locks but have to engage them. And exactly what is the ECT switch just abve the shifter for? Thanks.

I don't know about any of that other stuff, but the ECT thing basically lets the auto rev up more towards the 4k-5k range before it shifts, MUCH better acceleration, but uses more gas if you drive it hard.

The 4wd button on the transfer case shifter engages the 4 wheel drive system on the truck. You should not use this unless you actually need 4 wheel drive. Pushing the button will engage 4-wheel high range. The 4L is for low range (geared very high). This is to be used when you have very little traction in 2 wheel or 4 wheel high. This is for low speed manuvers. Topo speed willl be about 30 miles per hour.

I am not sure about on the Surfs, but the 4Runners and Tacomas have a light on the dash to indicate 4 wheel drive. Yours might just be blown. Mine is at the bottom right side of the dash. It is a green light that looks like the front wheels are turned.

Thanks, I think that the bulb has blown also, how do i get the instrument panel off to replace it?

To get to the bulb get a phillips screwdriver and get busy, you will get to it eventually. Its pretty unlikely that it is burned out in my oppinion.

For info on how to operate your 4 wheel drive, read the owners manual. If you don't have one get one.

If you do what the manual says to engauge 4WD and you still do not get the indicator light to light you probably have a disconnected, dammaged or clogged vaccum line on the front differential. Check that and verify that you do not have 4wd by trying to get stuck before you blame the instrument light.
