Hello,

We have gotten alot of snow and ice in Indiana. and when you are braking on in 4 wheel drive you lock up the wheels and start to slide, and in 2 wheel drive you lock up the tires anything over 10 mph. My question is, was 4 wheel ABS an option on any 2nd gen, and if it was what would it take to put it on? and why did they only put rear ABS on then that activates under 10 mph? very strange...

I may be wrong but I think in the 2nd gens, 4WD disables ABS. Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I have Rear ABS on my 92 and it's the most worthless thing ever. Obviously your front wheels are going to lock before your rears because of the disproportional 70/30 system, so if they had to make a choice, why not ABS on the front wheels and not on the rears? The ONLY time I've had the ABS engage for me is when I am in the rain or ice and I pop the clutch and make the rear wheels spin some because of it. I feel the vibrations and it lets me know that the ABS is working. However, if I ever have to slam on my brakes for anything, dry or wet, I slide (or scrape if in dry conditions) just as if I never had ABS.

However, on a more positive note, the 4-wheel ABS on my 2000 works wonders. The ABS engages precisely at the loss of traction point to avoid sliding and keeps the car from losing control. They definately improved from 92 to 2000.

Yes, 4wd disables the abs on the 2nd gens.

I'm not aware of any 2nd gen that has abs on all 4 wheels.

The reason they put abs on the rears and not the front is so that when you brake, you skid straight. If you put abs on the fronts only, then you are guaranteed to spin out of control. It works like a parachute on a dragster. If you put the parachute on the front of the car, the parachute will whip the front around to the back.

I guess there's something wrong with mine then, because I never feel them engage and I find myself skidding at an angle coming down hills in the rain half the time. :eek:

You need to slow down! The ABS should only engage in emergency braking situations. You're talking about way too many situations in which your sliding and skidding.

That was stock starting in 94. So was the addition of side impact beams in the doors and the high mounted tail light. I think 95 models also were the first with airbags.

I have to disagree. My 1995 had only rear ABS, and airbags weren't even an option. To my knowledge, all 2nd gen ABS systems worked only in the rear.

The 4 wheel ABS is NOT available on the 4wd version. If I recall correctly, it MAY have been available on the 2wd version.

I think that the key word in the Edmunds description is 'available'. It was available if you wanted to pay extra for it.

You can tell if it has 4 wheel ABS by looking at the number of brake lines coming out of the anti-lock module in the engine compartment. I believe there should be 4 lines out for 4 wheel ABS.
