4 vs 6

I was just wondering, the 3rd gen 4 runners wiht the 4 cylinder is the 22R-E and the V6 is the 3vze, correct?

I was just wondering how much more power the V6 actually has over the I4?

cuz I know the V6's nickname is the 3.slow and I also heard it gets pretty bad fuel mileage. and I usually see the 4 cylinders cheaper. AND they are better engines arent they?

You seem to be thinking of what are classically called 2nd Gen 4Runners. 3rd Gens, which started in 1996, had a 3.4L V6 (I can't recall its exact model #) and a new 4 cyl that is not the 22RE. The 3.0L was avail. in the trucks and 4Runners from 88-95 and the 22R (and RE) since like the 70's I think until '95.

definitely a big leap in engines from 2nd to 3rd gen.

2nd gen - 22R-E 4 cyl, 118hp, 140tq
3rd gen - 3RZ-FE 4 cyl, 160hp, 170?tq

2nd gen - 3VZ-E V6, 150hp, 180tq
3rd gen - 5VZ-FE V6, 190hp, 225tq

ok, I mixed up the generations, I am talking about the 2nd gens, I cant afford the 3rd gens.

I guess from looking at that I gotta go with the V6. off hand do you know which has more balls the nissan Z24 or the toyota 22r-E? I had the Z24 in the truck I just sold my parents and it is gutless, its still fun off road cuz 4 low would make a metros 3 cylinder feel like a torque monster with that huge gear reduction, but on the highway I wanted to get out and start pushing, especially on hills, even very mild hills. I found a solex 38/38 carb kit for it that claimed 20% more power but kit was almost what the truck cost me, so I didnt do it.

if the 22r was a bit beefier than a Z24 I might be able to deal with it but I just dont think it would be enough for a truck that will have toys in the back, havy bumpers and giant tires.

You can't go wrong with the 22re, I have one in my pickup. If you have it geared correctly then it will be just fine. You can also build up a 22re to be way more powerful than the 3vze will ever be. They are easier to work on. Very reliable. It may not be the most refined motor out there, but I dont think you will be dissapointed.

I was thinking about it cuz I have heard the headgaskets go on the 3.0 commonly, which I know I could do but I dont want to do that again, I bet its really tight in there too being a V6, my dads newer nissan hasa the VG30 I think 3 liter 6 and I wouold not wanna tear into that thing, but my honda and my old Z24, head is right there on the top with nothing around it and they were both peice of cake to install.

and seeing as gearing is cheap for toyota when comparing with nissans support (couldnt even get gears for my truck for under 500 last time I looked(each diff) or could swap newer housings in and get gears for around 240 each set.

seen a few 85 trucks around here im interested in solely that they have the new EFI and still the straight axle but I like the newer looks much more. I "might" go back ot the early 80's trucks with carb cuz I want straight axle but could eventually SAS my 2nd gen runner if thats where I end up, and I like the 2nd gen runners alot.

so the Z24 has a headgasket problem? or it doesnt have the 3 liters headgasket problem.

cuz I did have to replace my headgasket on the Z24 once, but its cuz my thermopstat stuck open and I didnt get to installing a new one and eventually it closed and stuck shut and I didnt catch it soon enough and had to install a new one, luckily there was NO head warpage or anything so 35 bucks later I was good to go, of course I threw in the new thermostat at the same time.

1986 and 1987 models also offered a 22R-TE, which is a turbo version of the 22R. It is faster than the Nissan and a lot of other 4 cylinder trucks of it's year. Check out www.turbotoys.net for more information. You could also do an engine swap, but that sound like it would be out of your budget.

well, I am selling a 92 integra GSR and a 90 integra LS alond with a couple expensive toys, so I will have some decent coin but wanna get a somewhat cheap truck so Ill have some to put down on a new quad, or buy a used late-90's 250 MXer.

for what I would probably have to spend on the 22R-TE ID rather use that money to build an older straight axle. Im sure the turbo ones arent cheap cuz I rarely ever see them for sale and they are a limited time deal back then. I might get the truck back from my parents at the end of the week if they decide not to kep it, Im trying to buy it back every day but they might keep it, if I get it I am gonna probably swap in a buick 3.8V6 or jst do the 38/38 carb mod and then get some 31's on it and deal with it til I can find a nice reasonbly priced runner and start building it, if they keep uit though I think im settled on a early 80's truck cuz I hated my IFS on my nissan, im sure with larger tires it wouldnt have been as big a pain but I was stuffing that front skid into the ground all the time when my tires were in the ruts on trails and I just didnt like it cuz it slowed me way down and also just bothers me.
