4:88's and 33's a good conbo?

Recently in my miles of travel I began to ponder if there was something better out there. I have a donor motor and had planned on a SC but perhaps I should start at the other end first. It's not more power I need but better use of the power I have. I'm running 4.56 now and while it's supposed to be stock with my 33's I have real problems climbing. My question to those running 488's and 33's is #1 what is you actual fuel economy #2 how much quicker do you reach highway speed #3 would you do it again. This applies to those who have put many miles on the 488's both on road and off.

Aaron...are you 5-speed or auto?

I've run my 4.88s with both 285/75s and 315/75s but I have an auto.

If you like what Scotty C (addicted offroad) has to say then he would suggest running 5.29 with the auto and 33s. And according to his thread he gets 19MPG.

But your in a 4cyl ex cab not a v-6 auto 4runner. Not to be a inconsiderate prick but I'm only interested in similar setups for this post. Side note on the Aussie, yep it's sweet.

Assuming they are using a GPS or speed calibrator to determine the mpg and not a mileage calculation.

Because of the stupid tall OD on the A/T.

5spd OD is .85:1
A/T OD is .70:1

My A/T with 5.29s and 33s runs lower rpms at hwy cruising speeds than a 5spd will equipped with only 4.56s and 33s.

A/T, 5.29s, 33s at 75mph= 2828 rpms
M/T, 4.56s, 33s at 75mph=2960 rpms

And the M/T rigs get better gas mileage.

I don't fudge my numbers. I calculate based on my GPS. I set the cruise control at 78mph, and 18.95mpg is my average on the hwy. If I slowed down to 70mph, I bet I could pull 20mpg.

Oh snap! I didn't mean you played with the numbers I meant anyone but you whom posted on here. Lets see your in CO so your Alt. is different which may account for better MPG and depening on your amount of ethanol mix vs. ours will change the numbers too. When I hit AL my MPG's go up but when back in FL and GA where the ethanol mix is higher the numbers decrease. I might have to spend the $400 to see if the 4:88's are worth it. Unless someone has one they want to loan me...........

Sorry, I wasn't implying that you called me out. Only that I make sure not to fudge my numbers. A lot of guys don't take into account tire size, gears, etc. My speedo runs 8% slow because of the tire size, but because of the wheel speed sensors, that is the only adjustment needed, so I add 8% to my mileage.

FWIW, the A/T just robs too much power to not go with 5.29s. But, the difference between 4.56s and 4.88s is marginal and wouldn't be worth it. IMHO A/T 4runner a way under geared right out of the factory.

Sheesh 5:29's huh? I think that is just to low..... Remember it had 4.10's from the beginning and the 4.56 seemed the better step. I feel with the gear weight and armor and other crap the 4.88 might be best.

X2, that's a lot of money for a small difference in gearing.

BTW I'm pretty happy with 5.29s and 33s on a supercharged auto 5VZ. It may be a little on the low side but I'd rather be on the low side than geared too high. How fast do you like to drive on the highway?

I'm not a lead foot because our vehicle don't allow for it (unless forced induction comes into play) so I drive normal around town and 70-83 mph which ranges bwtn 2400-2700 RPM's. I could drive slower but don't want he RPM's too high either.

I love my 4.88s/33s/AT/3.4 4runner. Mine pulls really good all across the board. I do agree w/ the rest of the guys who are recommending 5.29s though - that it's a lot of $$ for a marginal difference (going from 4.56s to 4.88s). It really depends on how much more power you need. If it's just a tiny bit more power you're after, 4.88s should do good for you. If you're looking for a significant increase, then go w/ 5.29s.

#1) Gas mileage. Mine went up about 1 mpg with the gears. I was averaging 17.5 highway/mountain roads/city when I had 4.11s and 33s. Now I'm getting 18.5.

#2) Never timed it, but I definitely go from 0-60 quicker. I can feel it suck me back in the seat a lot more than before.

#3) Do it over again? Yes, and I would stay w/ 4.88s only because I still do a lot of freeway driving and my rpms are high enough as it is (about 3000 @ 80 mph). Not bad, but any higher and I don't see how my fuel economy wouldn't start to suffer.

I can pull my trash trailer better now too. I don't have to pull over to let cars pass nearly as often.

Just remember the M/T had 4.10s as well. MUCH higher rpms, better gas mileage, and people not complaining about the gearing.

M/T 4.10s with a 30" tire @ 75mph= 2927 rpms
A/T 4.10s with a 30" tire @ 75mph= 2411 rpms

5.29s and 33s put you below a stock M/T truck's rpms.

75-80mph. All of our interstates are 75mph. I do a lot of backroad driving as well, but my 18.95mpg #s are at freeway speeds.

Some damn fine numbers there I wish I could validate each variable though, tires, air pressure, altitude, driving style, ethanol %.

4.88 auto, 4.56 manual (The recommendation on the boards for probably the last 10 years.) But as others have said, i wouldn't spend the cash for 4.88 if you're already at 4.56.

83 miles per hour just sounds a little too high for 5.29...but I don't have first had experience either like scotty. CA speed limits are 65/70 mph, and imo these toyotas never really seem all that happy to be going in the upper 70s anyways.
