You guys weren't ˟˟˟˟˟ting me on what a PITA it is to get those shims out!! Particularly if you dont have hte SST's! Only 3 of the valves are still in spec after 258,000 miles. lol EX 6 is down to 0.003" of valve lash!!

However right now I have the top end tore down I notice that 2 of my upper intake's runner are actually CLEAN while the other 4 are dirty! The intake runners for cyl #4 and 5 are clean but the rest arent. Also the intake runners for cylinders #4, 5, and 6, have a bronze/gold color to them. Why is this?

yep they suck.i wouldn't worry about the dirty intake.what made you check the valve clearance anyway.

I can't believe 2 of your runners were actually clean. The bronze color is a mix of oil, dirt, EGR, and time. The PCV system on the 3.0 puts a ton of oil into the intake. I have done away with mine completely. The best way I have found to clean the runners is to get an old shirt, tear it in half, spray some intake cleaner down a runner then stuff the shirt all the way down it (nice and tight). Get a drill with a fairly large bit (1/4"), get the spinning bit tangled up in the part of the shirt that's still outside the runner. Let the shirt spin around in the runner for about 10 seconds or so. This method cleans my runners perfectly.

.....or you could just run some top end cleaner like Seafoam or comparable.

Bumpin', hopefully I'll be doing a valve adjustment next weekend. Any tips on taking off the plenum or anything else. I will have the sst.

Dude that would ROCK!!! Right now im in sarasota and not gainesville so im a little farther away at present... Beer is on me when I can get this sucker back up and running!






I didnt pull the EGR modulator thingy from the plenum, but rather attacked the big nut that holds it on the exhaust riser.... I did pull all of the vacuum lines, the one fuel line, the cold start injector, and both coolant lines from the plenum. All hoses were marked with electrical wiring markers and crossrefrenced to a picture of the intake plenum with the corresponding numbers.... Im thinking about having this plenum ported and polished just to take all the gunk out that the EGR system dumped in....

You need to pull your EGR. I pulled mine after 140K miles and pulled big chunks of carbon off it and out of the intake. I had to shake the intake to get all of it out. Imagine how much is in yours after 260K miles. You can reuse your gasket.
