3VZE timing belt.. which idlers did you replace ?

Ater reading horror stories about water pump failure, I am going to replace my noisy pump this weekend.

I picked up :

* Pump
* Black sealer
* Timing belt
* No 2 idler pulley (big one)
* Tensioner

As I get a trade account I got all the above for $240 which ain't half bad

Do I really need the No 1 Tensioner ???

I can pick it up and return it if I don't use it but I cannot recall anone here saying they replaced it....

What did you do when you replaced your belt ??

Thanks

David

I sure wish I would have. Oddly enough, all 3 of my idlers started to show signs of wear at the same time (#1 and #2 on the timing belt and the one at the very bottom of the accessory belts that acts as a tensioner for the AC).

During my top end rebuild my idlers had no play in them and made no noise when spun, so I did not replace them. Now (10 months later) all of them have considerable play and #1 is actually squealing at idle. If I were you, I'd replace it just to be on the safe side.

I only replaced the #2 pulley when I did the pump on my 93 4Runner, drove it for 2 years after that with no problems from the other idler.

I did both pulleys on my 3.4 when I did the timing belt and water pump. Both did have a slight grind to them when I spun them by hand. Im sure they were years from failing but better safe than sorry. Since you have it apart you may just want to do it.
