so i got this 88 4runner and started to fix the stuff from the stupid owner i bought it from. I yanked the rearend and had it redone --that works good now. But, replacing the seal on the pinion gear with a new one didnt help as much as i would have liked. The thing still seeps and im sure i put it in right-- does anyone know if there is such thing as an undersized pinion seal for a high mileage truck--like the high mileage front crank seals. or maybe should i get a supra lsd or something ( are those the same gear ratio as the front diff? )

Took me 3 times before I got mine right!
First time it was done by my local mechanic. When it continued to leak he claimed that the yoke was probably grooved, from off-roading (dirt behind the seal). This was just a poor excuse for not doing it right the first time. Next time I took a whack at it...seal didn't seat properly and a seap went to a leak. Third time I had a mech friend do it...I'm dry for a full month at this point.

I think the key is to make sure the seat is clean and to use RTV on the seal. And don't forget to oil the seal before installation, otherwise you will burn the seal before the gear lube can reach it.
