3rd gen supercharged, spark plugs

Anybody know what it takes to replace the spark plugs on a supercharged 4runner 3rd gen. I heard I have to remove the supercharger but I am not that brave yet until I get some info on it. Thanks, any info will help

I'll be interested to hear the answer as well. I have 6 Denso IK20 spark plugs sitting in my garage waiting 4th of July weekend

You don't have to remove the supercharger. It is the fuel injectors that require the removal. Should be a straight forward swap. Check out the Hayes manual available from any autoparts store. It is only $14 and has really helped me as a beginner.

To change the plugs you need a plug wrench and at least 6" of extension, 12" of extension makes it as easy as stock.

A universal joint in addition to the extension will help even more, esp. for the plug on the driver's side that is closest to the firewall.

You don't have to remove the S/C or the Injectors, who ever told you that has never done it. A nice combination of extensions and a universal joint and you'll be fine. Just be sure to start them by hand. Getting one in crooked would be a huge PITA.

Thanks for all the great advice. Is it difficult to replace the injectors with aftermarket injectors? Is there anything I should be cautious with when removing the S/C? I do not know what lurks within the S/C and that is the reason I do not want to mess with it.

I would be very careful with the supercharger bolts that go on the manifold. They are pretty long, and could break easy.


I was able to install my 2 step colder plugs (NGK BCPR-7ET) with my S/C on..
