3rd gen runner alternator...did your idiot light come on when it died?
Mine did not.....i got lucky though.
Anyone have any issues with a duralast alternator from Autozone?
Has anyone found a way to fix the idiot light dilemma because i'm sure it has stranded more than a few owners.

I have a voltmeter in all my vehicles I like to keep a eye on system voltage .
It seems all the reman electrical parts these days the quality has really declined.
Are you able to rebuild yours or maybe have it done local?/
Then the down time is always a factor!!
I priced a new one at my dealer a while back it was not that bad.
Perhaps check Rock Auto for a new Denso.
Good luck!!

yea.....one vehicle with no down time. I just put in the autozone lifetime warranty alternator. I'm still puzzled as to why the voltage idiot light did not come on and why Toyota would put a temp gauge instead of a big red light?? I've had my temp gauge pinned hot and unless you look....You're engine is gonna blow!
So....i can be discharging or overheating and never realize until its too late. Crazy!

Dumb question: did you check the bulb?
(It should come on with the key before engine starts.)
Often if the bulb is dead the alt. will not excite and, obviously, you won't get the light on to tell you there is a problem.
To check the warning light circuit, turn the ignition switch to the “on” position without cranking or starting the engine; if the idiot light does not come on, remove the plug from the alternator and ground the sense wire (wire connected to the bulb--yellow/green wire on pin 1 on a '99 4Runner--yours might be the same.) If the light comes on, the wiring is okay but the alternator is defective; if the light still does not come on, the wiring to the light circuit and the bulb should be checked.

Key on engine off.....battery light works. I'll have to test the wire at a later date.
I got lucky at autozone because the guy switched out my battery at no charge for a new one and then rechecked the system and found it discharging.
The whole situation could have been real ugly if i were out in BFE like i am quite often.
You know.....70 miles to the nearest gas station......only border patrol to help you.

mine lasted 230,000 miles.
The real scary thing is that there was no warning. just a slow turn over one morning....then dead leaving work. Got jumped at work and got a new battery at autozone.
For giggles the guy said let throw my tester on to make sure you are charging. I was not charging!
I have an Arizona truck so things just last longer here with no snow, road salt or continuous wet weather to rust things out.

hello
Been having issues with my 98 4runner lately but I can't pinpoint the problem. My battery light sometimes stays on at first start and intermittently turns off/on. This happens mainly when I press the gas from a stop, stays on for 5-10 seconds and turns off. This also happens even in the middle of the freeway. Connected a voltmeter and readings seem fine: 12+ when engine is off, between 13.75 - 14.25 when running. I do notice big drops when I press on all 4 window switches at same time. 4runner starts fine, never sputtered or dies. Battery is less than a year old. I believe I still have the original alternator from 98 and have 270K miles. Please help. should I just change the alternator or try a new battery? Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.
Just some history: recent work done was timing belt kit (water pump, timing belt, drive belts, etc.) about 5 months ago. no problems popped up till now.

Also sometimes in the morning when I start the car and the battery light would stay on for quite a while. I connected the voltmeter and it read 12+ While the engine is running
