Okay after running out of money and cheap things to do I am finally fed up with the chrome rear bumper. I have an ARB front and figure the finish is satin or semi gloss. I would like to get the rear some what close to the ARB. I did think about matching the rear to the wheels in the gun metal gray or (duplicolor wheel dark gray). Though that would throw the color scheme off.

Ironically I saw a red 3rd gen today with the front bumper painted red. Looked cool... or at least definitely caught my eye.

I think the charcoal color of the wheels...maybe even hurculiner with the charcoal color over it...

The herculiner will be more texture than I want. I painted the wheels so I can paint the bumper. I was thinking sand hand or sand blast, then primer, primer sand color, color, clear. I could use the liner in a can which is what I painted my grill and hitch with but I didn't want texture just smooth.

Painting chrome is tough make sure you prep enough, and when you think you have prepped enough prep more! But I say go with the color of the wheels since you can get an exact match and I think it would blend better and the front bumper would look like more of an addition to the truck.

where'd you get that color for your wheels? I like it. Another thing. it may just be me but those wheels look a lot like jeep cherokee wheels. lol

I've always admired the AEV wheels and can't say their color didn't have a hand in my wheel color picking. Though so did some of the other toyota and lexus rim colors. I Like the magnesium color. Hmm so the wheel color huh, well it is a variation of gray like the body color.

just find a base model black bumper, and rattle can that. dont match it with your wheels, then your arb will be the one mismatched. keep it rattlecan black...it matches well with the PC of the arb. not sure what to do with the flare piece though...id say paint that black too to hide it more since you dont have the matching front piece.

i just recently swapped out my crinkled chrome rear for a black one my buddy gave me off his runner. looks MUCH better...esp with 01 tails...

Don't color match your rear bumper with the wheels. Thats stupid.

You gotta match your front bumper with the rear... black and black, no other choice man.

The wheels look good with the gunmetal, but, not one bumper grey and one black...d errr!!!

I'm looking to do the same thing w/ my chrome bumper. I got a quote from a body shop to prep and paint it for $100 OR I can get it powder coated for $250.

i'm no professional but i'd say prep it yourself and use something called "BullDog" adhesion promoter by a company called "Klean-Strip". i have a can of that and i've used it for plastic mostly but the can says it coats "chrome, plastic, fiberglass, aluminum, glass, vinyl, galvanized metal" and also says "Makes paint stick to all automotive surfaces". has worked well for my projects so far, but i haven't used it for metal or an exterior application like a bumper though. but, i think i'll use this in the summer when i do some exterior painting on my 4runner in various places.

Well being one for doing things myself pretty much the whole truck, I think I might take a stab at satin blacking the rear bumper and lower mud flap bits that are silver currently. I saw the Duplicolor bumper spray and they showed it going over plastic but if someone has used it on metal I'm in for a treat. The primer you speak of reminds me of another product I can't recall off the top of my head but at least I'm headed in the right direction.
