3rd gen rear axle seal leak solution?
I know I have read on more than one forum about troubles with rear axle seal leakage. Has anyone come up with the definitive solution yet?
I was test driving a '99 a few days ago and thinking about buying it. It was at a GM dealer and they gave me the big pep talk about their "Optimum" used vehicles and how they had gone over it from top to bottom. One of the things they mentioned was the replacement of a rear axle seal. That made me wonder if it was one of the ones that causes trouble.
How wide spread is the problem? Does it mainly affect certain years?
Is there a solution?
I didn't buy the truck but not because of this issue. Someone else bought it before I got back to them.

i don't think it's that big of a problem. i'd like to say that most failures are either from damaging the seal when it is installed or having a clogged breather that results in pressure building inside the axle housing, which in turn pushes gear oil out past the seals
