i was replacing both of my rear wheel cylinders today and noticed the RR axle is starting to accumulate grease behind the hub.

im a toyo tech and i bought my 97 4run almost a month ago. i do have a warranty from were i bought it, however it is out of state and several hours away. they gave me 100% parts and labor for 30days, while covering the engine, tranny and axles. now, this place was kinda of a raggamuffin shop and they did some very poor service work from what ive seen. Im not sure id even want them to touch my rear axle. Any idea on how long i got until the seal blows and fills with diff fluid? BTW i leave on vacation on the 5th of may, which happens to be the end date of my warranty...

im not so sure id even do the work, ive never done one and both of our master tech's have some difficulties with them. i do get an awesome discount on parts..i might just say screw the warranty.

however i did look up retail for all the parts.....$500+ w/o labor

any feedback for my next move???

I would check to see if the breather on top of the dif. is clogged or rusted shut. My driver's side rear was leaking because my extended breather was pinched.

This happened to me at 58,000 still under the factory drive train warranty.

My total bill was 400. Warranty covered it. 50 bucks for rear brake shoes, 12 bucks for seals and the rest was labor.

All you have to do is unbolt the 4 nuts on each end and slide the axles out. Try it it's not that hard. Just make sure to don't screw the seal up when you put the axle back in.

i made sure both breathers were loose before i even took a test drive in it

does anyone know of a way to replace the seals without having to replace the axle? it does have abs, and i believe the abs gear makes the job a SOB.


what do you guys run in your diffs and transfer?
ive used redline in my supra and have no complainsts against it.
i can always use 80-90 and 75 because its free in the shop BUT i was just curious if there were any better alternatives.

Anyone know about using transmission fluid type T-IV in 4runners?
