3rd gen hatch lift

can any 3rd gen runner owner share?

Mine needs extra effort in fully opening the rear hatch, can hold staying up.
Upon closing, needs that extra effort again in pulling down with a little slam.

do yours can open fully wide on its own upon lifting about 1/3 of the way up ? and closes without much effort pulling down?

thanks

Mine opens all the way by itself in the summer, but when it gets cold outside it needs a push for the last 6 inches or so. And it needs a good pull to get it down.
If yours won't go all the way up the struts have probably leaked some of the gas out. There's a guy in this part of the world that rebuilds them, but shipping from the Philippines would not be worth it. If it gets to be too bad you'll probably need to replace them.

yep, same problem here...the summer time gives better results when trying to open it, as then it takes less effort. but in the winter, you really have to push it up or down...but i'm used to it now

mike, eric,

thanks for the feedback... I just envy the local toyota vans with hatch(not necessary a surf/4runner) owners here, how easily they open theirs.

I am just contemplating on getting a brand new, or a used pair.

would you know if the new ones include the flanges that are bolted to the hatch/body?

go new, otherwise you may find some that somebody is selling because they had the same problem, mine opens freely, i got new ones for $67 on ebay, cant beat that. And even if you do get used ones and they work, whos to say how long they will last versus new ones? If you have extreme temperature variances where you live i know they wear out a lot faster. just something to think about.

You can also get new ones at pepboys for about the price, i almost picked up a pair a few months back.

They are like $35 each there.

They could have lighter tailgates, the one on a 3rd gen 4Runner is very heavy with the power window in it.

the website is: http://www.pepboys.com/

Though i don't think you can order online, you will need to find a local store. If there is not one around then i am sure that autozone, or someplace else would have them as well.

You can also check ebay, i seem to remember them being sold there as well.

I really cant access pepboys, but was able to see autozone. These are just replacement parts, aren't they? Good enough?

I can't afford a wrong item delivery since I am from overseas...Are these online store reliable? Autozone, I mean.

Hmmm, you don't have ANY kind of car parts store over there?

I have heard NAPA likes places like that (have never been to one myself).

any parts store should be able to order these, i would try to find them local first.

If all else fails, try this:

http://www.car-stuff.com/mmparts/toy...unk_strut.html

I just don't know if they ship to you. Search google, there are other places selling them too if not. I would still try a local place if possible.

TA,

we have lots of parts store, it's just that my 3rd gen surf are not released here by Toyota locally, ordering these hatch lifts through Toyota dealer or genuine parts dealer will definitely cost me an arm and a leg.

I bought used parts from a couple of guys here at yotatech and had them shipped to LA... it will be put in a box(filling it up with other goods to maximize shipping cost) going here.

... thus I cannot afford a mistaken parts.

Well these are not any kind of speical part just so you know.

The pepboys i got to has a whole shelf of these shocks for all sorts of things. it is like finding an oil filter, you look in the book and see which one fits your car.

Would be worth it to try, you would be surprised what those places can get. and if you could get it local from a parts store it would be a lot easier to work with IMO.

But if all else fails then by all means go for it.
