3rd Gen Bumper Replacement

My rear bumper looks like crap on my 99 4Runner. I can't really put $1k into a special made off road bumper. I was wondering if I could buy a tube bumper for a different generation 4Runner and just maKe new mounts.

Goofy idea or not? Thanks for your input.

Check with Marlin Crawler, All Pro Off Road, Downey.... they have some good choices for rear bumpers.

The size of the oem bumper allows for a lot of "unfinished" areas including a spot for an air pressure release that is pretty ugly to look at. If you can live with that then getting a cheap tube bumper fabb'd up might be worth it, but not too pretty IMHO...

Oh I didn't know that. That is quite a drawback. Thanks to both for the input.

The OEM bumper is three pieces so you can just replace the part that looks like crap. Check on Ebay, knock off replacements are pretty cheap.

I've looked at buying that center section but I really don't like the chrome bumpers. I suppose I could get one and paint it though.

I've never tried it, but, I am pretty certain the 3rd gen bodies are quite a few inches wider to the point where fitting an older style bumper wouldn't work. Who knows. Never seen it.

You can buy cheap black bumpers (OEM STYLE) from eBay for cheap. Also look into guys like DeathCougar who can set you up with some OEM ones for a good price!

Bumper replacements

Get on Ebay I bought a chrome bumper all 3 pieces for $300 shipping included Had to enlarge somes holes with a drill, use a rubber hammer to massage the fit on the side pieces to fit better to center piece you can't tell I did anything other than bolt up. Painted ones are cheaper

How bad is your's? I took mine off and rebuilt it with no major tools or $$$. Look how it looks in my profile. When i took a wire wheel to mine I ended up with rust holes larger then a golf ball and you can't tell now. It's a short term fix because I want to upgrade my bumper in a year or two. I'm just in research mode looking to see where I want to get it. Many places wont sell a prebuilt one because they want to custom fit\build it to your 4Runner (to make sure it fits perfect). The only place up here willing to make bumpers quoted me $900 for one. And it was just a bumper with no mounts for anything else.... A little too $$$$ for my tastes.
