Just wondering if the oem tow points (front and rear) on the 3rd gen runner are adequate for snatch recovery? Im in the process of getting together proper recovery gear, and since i dont have a hitch, i'll have to use the ones available...or should i get a hitch for the back? I really dont want to...

I've also got a hook on the front...would it be better to use that? or the bracket with the hole in it? I plan to get at least two 3/4" D shackles as well...

And final question: Straps or rope? I've searched all over..and it seems like most are running straps. However, upon reading the 4Wheeler Bible, the author and most people he knows opt for the ropes instead. Im looking to get a 2 or 3" X 20', 20,000lbs strap, or a 1" rope. Any specific recommendations?

as far as I know and have heard, factory tow points are not sufficient for recovery. It is recommended that you get a shackle. I'm using straps myslelf for the gear.

hmm..ok. but where do i connect the shackle to on the frame?

The front tow hook is your only recovery point. The other points you mention are only meant to be tie downs for shipping.

Thanks ray & jim. Im really not keen on buying and putting on a rear receiver. I bought a couple tow hooks rated at 10,000lbs. I should be able to replace those tie down brackets with a pair of hooks..right?

Yes, the bolt holes should line up with the aftermarket hooks. I have a set of aftermarket hooks on the front and I moved my original tow hook to the drivers side rear. You will have to buy longer metric bolts they are M12 1.25 pitch.

So where did you mount the one in the rear? I was just looking at my 98 tacoma and didn't see anywhere to mount a hook.

i was at 4x4 connection over the weekend and they said that the stock ones in the front arent strong enough so i had to buy some hooks

i have used the stock hook up front several, several times, and its proven its worth. i pulled out an f250....that was a sight.

as for the rear, i have a hook mounted on the rear left part of the frame. i used the two holes that were there already; the previous owner had a hitch, and the holes were spaced exactly the same distance apart as the hook holes. this hook has also proved its worth several times. but as for rear points of recovery, the best situation is to have a hitch, because it gives you a central point.
