The sending unit goes in the line leaving the transmission going to the trans cooler:

terminator- i got the tabs off of ebay and had a guy weld them on.
artic hawk907- just put it in line from the tranmission before the cooler, i didnt take pics at the time of install and now it is covered by the skid plate. only issue i had was that i had to run a ground strap to the t connection that i used to hold the sending unit so that it would work properly.

Now in the case of the senders that Speedy, Dale, and I used (an AutoMeter sender) they have two wires coming out the top in a small connector. One is signal, and the other is ground; both wires go back to the gauge. This means that you do not have to ground the body of the sender, because the ground is handled by the second wire coming back from the sender. Hence, the sender can "float" whereve you like, and what you screw it into does not have to be electrically grounded.
It's a convenience factor more than anything, you just have to know the specific grounding requirements of your sender when installing it.

I used a single wire temp senders as well, also had to ground the Tee so it would work right. Running VEi systems dual gauges and they recommended stripping about an inch worth or wire and wrapping around the body of the sender and securing it with a hose clamp. I was a little worried but once all the wiring was done it worked great! still working now for 8 weeks through the summer...we'll see once the winter rolls in here in CO. Also used Loctite 518 instead of teflon tape due to fact of possibly running high enough temps to melt the tape.

Mastacox- yeah i ended up going with the green digital trans temp guage so it would match the green factory lights in the dash. The digital also has bright and dim settings and has a user programable high temp warning. Will flash at the user set temp.
