BTW, if you drop the passenger side of the sway-bar it will save you a lot of grief.

I just finished changing the contacts on my Starter for a 1997 4Runner Limited 2wd. Getting the starter out wasn't as bad as I thought after reading the posts. I just lowered the starter and put it through the opening above the Control Arm. I twisted it around the shock and it was out in a matter of 15 seconds. Taking those two bolts off was a totally different story.

bump
I just did this, and did it a little differently. it depends on year, manual or auto, and california or non california exhaust (for an exhaust bracket or no exhaust bracket) so what was facing me primarily was the atf tube did not want to separate, and I didn't want to mess with it further. 1) 1999 4runner limited, AT 2) I didn't mess with my swaybar 3) I did remove my skid plate, just to make 1/2 inch more room between sway bar and steering rack for the starter to fall out 4) I did unbolt the top atf tube clamp, by reaching down and around my air intake. and just moved the atf tube sideways when I needed to. you can move it 2 inches which is all that is needed 5) I did unhook 2 power steering lines down below, and bent them out of the way and let them drain 6) I used a 14mm swivel socket on a 3 inch-10 inch-3 inch extension, 3/8 ratchet for the 2 starter bolts. did this from below snaked above my cat and pipe. it was pretty easy actually, even though the starter was way the hell up there while I was laying on the ground. just finagle the socket up there and pray it loosens in 3 clicks. it did. 7) I dropped the starter through the bottom, past my power steering tubes to get it out this way I didn't have to mess with the AT tube o-ring. it was pretty tight on it and I didn't want to risk breaking or bending the tube everything else the same as described. pull off front tire, remove the 2 frame bolts holding the brake line to move it aside. was a riot taking it out. took me a long time. next time it would take 1/4 the time. now my 4runner starts up fast. my contacts at 140,000 miles were just about dust. I got new bigger contacts and a new plunger from ebayer clickerfixer. he sells better contacts for the denso and a new plunger which is exact fit. definitely stick jack stands under there, and use eye protection !
