3rd gen 4runner radio

I did a search, but I didn't find anyone experiencing the same problem as me. My stock radio will not play burned cd's. My 4runner is an '01 with the single cd. My friend had a '00 celica that played them with no problem. I don't understand why mine gives me trouble, I would think they are the same internals. I would like to keep the stock stereo instead of going aftermarket. Has anyone had similar problems with their stock cd player?

Mine was hit or miss. Depended on the CDs used and the temperature outside of all things. In cooler weather I had more problems. I upgraded to a Pioneer that plays MP3s and never looked back.

I may have to go that route, but I was trying to see if I was the only one or if a good bit of people were having the problem. If it were just me, I would try to pick up someone's used radio. Sounds like everyones may be hit or miss as you say though.

I had the same trouble as you. The Rewritable ones will never play on it, luckily I have never had any problems with the Maxell CD-R. You can get 50 for $15 I believe.

What type of disk is it? I found that the only ones that dont work in my 99 are the black and some coloured bottom ones. The cdr memorex/sony/fuji always work in mine. Also, you didnt burn them to mp3 did you? dumb question, but ya never know.

they were sony and maxell. Nah, they aren't burned in mp3 either. I am trying to play the same cds that I played in my tahoe's stock cd player and never had a problem.

I've ran a bunch of burned CDs in mine with no problems.... Kinda odd that it would be hit and miss.

Toyota's stock CD players are pretty bad, although they're no where near as bad as some American car radios (AC Delco, etc). The signal to noise ratio on the stock 4Runner's stereo is horrid, imho.

Burned CD-Rs rarely play in my 4Runner's deck, either. And yeah, the temperature does affect things.

Personally, I'd look into a replacement and find a kit that makes it (the dash) look as clean as possible. Plus, if you have an iPod, a new deck like the Alpine iDA-X001 might be worth looking into. It retails for about 450, but can be found for under 400. I know a few people who really like it.

The stock radio, cd player, and cassette deck, in my 99 recently met the "Big green Box" better known as the dumpster outside my shop door.

Upgraded to a Kenwood system. Much better but no cassette player but I don't care.

Time for an upgrade!!! http://www.oemvalue.com/toyota.htm

I've had my OEM NAV in since 2004. best upgrade for my 4Runner to date. The NAV is awesome, and it really enhances the look of the interior.

Rearview, you have to tell us more about that system. 3rd Gens are not on the list of compatible vehicles.

Any Toyota w/ Double DIN from 1990-present is compatible. The system in my 4Runner is an OEM Camry/ES330 Navigation. It's plug and play with the stock wire and stock amps. Took < 2 hours to install. Here is my old thread.... https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/my-first-4runner-mod-47322/

I did not see this model listed on their site. It looks like option 1 but the camry application is option 2. Do they have other models not listed on their site?

BTW, you install looks great...very jealous. Now I got to get the wife on board with the $$$.

The difference between the two options is whether or not your 4Runner had the stock JBL amps already in it or not. If it does, you just need the one without amps, if you have an older model 4Runner then the amps are required, even with that it's still plug and play. My 2000 Limited had the amps already in it so I just needed the NAV unit.
