3rd Gen 4Runner fuel pump

I have a 2wd 3rd gen 4runner... problem started a while back, but while Im running at a constant speed, the engine seems to hesitate and seems like its missing. I first thought it was the transmission slipping, but tach never revs up when it hesitates. I spent $1300 to have all the fluids, including the coolant, differential, transmission, flushed and the technician siad the transmission fluid was red and in good condition that was taken out... I also had the fuel injectors cleaned and did a standard tuneup with all new spark plugs.... what gives... based on some web searches, im thinking the fuel pump may be quittting on me... anyone know how much a replacement costs and how hard they are to replace in the 4rd gen 4runners? im guilty of running the fuel level too low too many times and think that may be the culprit...

Did you replace the fuel filter? It's located on the drivers side frame rail facing the drive shaft. To replace the fuel pump, you have to drop the fuel tank to gain access to the pump which is located on the top of the tank. The pumps are inexpensive and doesn't take long to swap....

yes, i also replaced the fuel filter... is dropping the tank difficult? I read that that tank also needs to be thoroughly cleaned out in order to make the pump last longer...
