Have you done any of the fuel mods yet?

If you have done the ISR, deckplate or elbow mod you might want to reinstall the restriction at least temporarily. If you run a lean condition too long you could do some serious damage.

At the very least you should be looking at some supra injectors and a walbro fuel pump.

Isn't that also that same code that comes up with the MAF sensors need to be cleaned on the 3.4's?

i don't have any fuel mods done yet but after 65k i got this check engine light on for the first time. i did replace the plugs to a colder plug, gapped it to 32'' like trd said, but that is it(10k ago) and while pulling my boat from the lake up a hill it came on..

where should i look to get these injectors, and pump from?

CTB might have something there, totally forgot about that!
Definately check that first and clean it just to be sure.

ok well here is what a toyota independant shop said today.

not to clean the maf because it can damage it.
but they did some diag work (chargered 60 bucks) and told me i need a pre cat o2 sensor bank 1.
this fault does not make sense to me. because it's not showing any o2 sensor faults..
but i can get toyota parts @ cost rather then 139.00 + 60.00 to install it.
should i replace both pre cat sensors.

I don't think replacing the sensor will help the problem but you are certainly free to try it.

First check for a vacum leak (cracked or unhooked hoses, etc...)

Then check out these threads:
http://www.yotatech.com/showthread.p...n+MA F+sensor

Even better:
http://www.yotatech.com/showthread.p...hlight=02+code

and lastly:
http://www.yotatech.com/showthread.p...lean+o2+ code

Should be enuf evidence to convince you of your problem.

When my O2 sensor went I did not get a 171 code. The 171 means system lean NOT bad O2 sensor....you can curse out the auto shop guys now for their crappy advice. I think it says O2 sensor out of spec or something like that. Do a search on cleaning your MAF sensor and you should be back up and running in no time.

Here is a thread for cleaning it:
http://www.yotatech.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3310

Good call again by CTB!

Hey, thanks MTL_4runner.

mark_fit - don't worry about cleaning your MAF - tons of guys on here have done it. Just do a search for the many threads on this topic. I'm pretty sure all it takes is a q-tip, some electrical contact cleaner, and a gentle hand.

Let us know what you find out!

ok guys, i cleaned the MAF. Cleared the faults using a buddys scanner, and i will go drive it tommorrow. It looked clean, there is a round bead of like a hard wax at the tip to keep the two wires together. (right) And man were the 2 screws on tight, almost stripped them.
I also got the scanner to keep for a few days, is there anything i should watch for in the ecu doing.

Do toys have any adaption values it goes by? Do they need clearing or just the code cleared is cool..
I took some pics but i can't post them. Anybody wanna give it a shot i'll e-mail them as attachments.
thx guys

The little bulb thing is only one of the things you need to clean. There is also two thin wires if you look down one of the holes. These also need to be cleaned but are very hard to get to.

I have a 1999 SC'd 4 Runner and also had a P0171 code (bank one lean) and after paying a local shop $65 to tell me that and clear the code, I still had a lean condition in bank one.

Luckily, with the help from Jay here, I was told to clean the MAF. All I can tell you is WHOLLY GOD! It made a HUGE difference in performance. Obviously, it was very dirty.

Mike

PS- I wrote a thread about this titled "Clean your MAF" a while ago.
