3rd gen 285 spare tire?

Are any modifications needed to mount the spare tire underneath the rear for a 285/75R/16 tire on a 3rd gen 4Runner?

I didn't have to do anything, except may be letting most of the air out and airing up after it's in place.

i have a similar Q... if i have 285/70/16 tires, can use a 265/70/16 spare? or is that ridiculous?

what if i have 265/75/16 tires and a 265/70/16 spare

as a spare the difference is negligable(sp). it will get you off a trail or an interstate. it would be one thing if oyu had 35s and a 31" spare. IMO

You can run one with no problem if you don't have a hitch receiver mounted.

If you do want a hitch receiver, the only one that I know of that works is the Hidden Hitch Class III, square tube style. It is part # 87511, which can be found on this page. OEM receivers will not work.

Yep. The factory hitch won't clear a tire that large.

Running different diameter tires is never a good idea, especially for long distances. One problem is it can prematurely wear out a limited slip differential, with one wheel constantly turning faster than the other.

To get you off the trail and back home, heck yeah, you should be fine.

Mine did not fit with the hitch until i got the 1.5" body lift. It fits fine now...It doesn't matter though, 'cause my Sonoran Steel rear bumper comes TOMORROW!

On the 265 spare with 285's...wouldn't that cause chaos with your traction control? Mine goes off if one of my tires has very low pressure...

when i went to 35's, i put a 285 under there for my spare, but i had to cut off my custon hitch to do it.... (super tight fit with the 265) but that didn't bother me too much, my new bumper has a hitch built in-

If you air down a 285 to about 12 PSI it will fit with a factory hitch, you just have to make sure when raising it into position, that you don't let it rest agains the panhard bar. This is how I have mine mounted.
