32/11.5/15 tires on a taco

Hi guys

I have searched high and low for the answer to my question but to no avail. I am in the market for new tires, and am thinking about moving up to 32's. My Taco is stock at the moment, but I am wondering how much lift will keep 32 inch tires from rubbing. Would the 1.5" cornfed kit do it? Or less even?I would prefer to go with as little as possible, just enough to keep the tires from rubbing during articulation. I am eyeing up the OME stuff but don't have a grand laying around at the moment

Gracias

Hi Pat

I have never tried running 32's with 1 1/2" of lift, so I cannot speak from experience as to whether it will work or not. My guess is that you will experience some rubbing, although nothing really depressing. I run 32" tires with about 2 1/2" of lift, and the only time I get rubbing is when I lock full turn with the steering.

I noticed that you are in AZ. Do you know about the AZ chapter ot TTORA? I suggest that you head over to the forum and post your question there as well. There are lots of helpful Tacoma enthusiasts on the forum, and you might think about joining us for a trail run sometime.

Take care

Man, thats a sweet truck you've got! I hope mine grows up to be like yours someday

I didn't know about the AZ ttora, thats cool. I'd love to get out there for a trail run sometime.

As far as the tires, maybe i oughta just stick with 31's for now, as I don't like rubbing, and I'm not ready for 2 1/2" of lift just yet.

Thanks for the reply

Good luck with the Delphi forums that TTORA uses...what a pain the rear! That's why I'm calling this home.

pat317az - i had 32x11.5s on my taco with 2" lift. there was a little rubbing but not much. with 4" lift i cannot get them to rub. if you trimmed the inner fenders, you could probably fit 32s with 1.5" lift. 2" and you'd be fine without trimming. 2.5" and you'd have hardly no rub. 3" and you'd be all set.

3.4v6 - you could fit 33s and you would probably have a little rubbing at full turn, but i wouldn't be too concerned with it. you shouldn't have to regear for 33s with a v6.

Well I guess my next question is, how much gearing/speedo change did you notice when going to 32's?

Pat, thanks for the compliment If you are on a tight budget for the time being, but want to get some 32"s since you are in the market for new tires anyway, you might think about doing a coil spacer in the front, and an add-a-leaf in the rear. If you were to ask around on the AZ forum, you might find someone who has an AAL to sell cheap, or a leaf pack that you could swipe a leaf from to get some lift. You can also buy Downey shackles from Mike at www.xtremeoff-road.com (call him on the phone # listed) for around $47 plus tax.

Anyway, if you went this route, you could get the 32"s under there with no probs, and then you would have the tires for later on when you can afford to do OME or an adjustable coil setup. If you don't plan on getting the more expensive setup before the next 40,000 miles or so, then you might just be best to stick with the 31"s and save the $$. But if you get the spacer setup, you could always sell it when you upgrade. Just some ideas.

Jason, you will forever get varying opinions on the 3"/33" combo. Some people say it's no big deal, and others say you need at least 4", but 6" is better. I think that regardless of which side of the argument you lean to, everyone will agree that you will need to hammer the pinch weld, possibly do some trimming, pay attention to your backspacing, and live with some rubbing. A 285/75/R16 would probably be the least trouble. As far as re-gearing, it is really a matter of preference. You will definitely be able to notice a difference vs. stock, but it's not going to keep you from driving and 4-wheeling. There are people who drive around with 35" tires and stock gears (although I would probably kill myslef first )

I noticed the gearing with mine, but I also carry a lot of extra weight over stock. Mine is noticeable climbing hills on the freeway, and trying to go really slow in the rocks. Other than that, it's not noticeable. The speedo is just fine - checks out with the GPS and barely off with the odometer.

You will be fine with 32"s.

yeah you'll be okay with stock gears. you will notice the change, but its not a big deal at all.

i think i would be able to fit 33s with the setup i have now... with some minor rubbing.

bajataco mentioned what seems like a good setup for you. spacers in the front, and AALs or shackles in the back. and my speedo seems pretty close with my GPS as well. a little slower but close enough.

Sweet!

That seals the deal, I'm gonna go for the 32's. I have been working a lot of overtime lately so I should have some more play money real soon. Now I just have to figure out what kind of lift to go with.

Hey Pat,
Will you keep me updated about what you find regarding lifts. I have some 32x11.5 BFG MT's on layaway right now and I have been trying to figure out how I was going to fit them. I had heard that a 1" RB body lift would fit them, but after reading this thread I'm starting to think that might not work. I'm going to ask some of the NMTTORA guys and see what they say. If you wouldn't mind I'd like to hear what you find and I'll let you know what I find.
-Ray

BTW welcome to the forum, I always love seeing Taco's on the board.
