$3K to replace head gaskets? No way... You sure they're not replacing the heds as well? HG's on my 3.0 cost all of $950 the second time, which included $150 in new headbolts... something seems WAAAAAY off on that estimate..

Timing belt and water pump shouldn't cost that much. Does it need head gaskets? You need to try a different dealer on the X01 Head Gasket Campaign.

Somebody at that dealership has been smoking crack. I was quoted about $900.00 by my local dealer (Dallas area). I tried going to another dealer for the Head Gasket Campaign, but was told my was already done. I only have 90 pounds in the number 6 cylinder when it should be 140. I have 198,000 on my current motor so I started looking into replacements. I found local small shops in the newspapers that would put in a rebuilt for around $1500. I actually ended up finding a whole T-100 truck with a motor that only has 50,000 miles on it on E-bay for $800.

Searching on google this is what I found:
"The head gasket is the gasket that supplies the sealing between the block and cylinder head which houses your valves, ect. If it leaks, it can either be internal or external. If external, you see antifreeze leaking. This is more common on the 3.4L. If internal, you get a loss of power and see a lot of white smoke out the exhaust. This was the more common leak on the 3.0L."


I guess my VIN doesn't fall into the correct range for Toyota to fix it.

96 and 97 ones did, yes....thus why there was a campaign to replace them.

If you are really looking at spending $3k for the gaskets I say get a used 3.4L and put that in instead.
Don't even bother with the rebuild and sell the other parts on ebay.

Bull... the most expensive one's we've done at GM was maybe around $1200 because we had a mess to begin with. But I know for a fact that Toyota has a higher shop rate pay than GM, Ford, or Dodge (depends) dealers do.

I agree with the used motor idea if it comes to that. I would also get a second opinion and estimate from another dealer.

I paid around $1600 last January at the dealership. Price included new drive belts.
I asked about replacing the timing belt and they said there would be more labor costs involved because they don't remove the bottom part of the timing belt.
Should be more like $2000 not $3000.

I called another dealer - they said it would cost around $1400 in labor and $300 in parts to do the head gasket, timing belt, and water pump.

Of course I just have a slight leak right now... so maybe I'll get lucky and get another 100,000 miles before it dies.

Do I just have to keep an eye out for leaked fluid or something?

i have a 22r, but i jsut repalced my head gasket a couple months ago.... $500 in total output... did all the work myself, got a full toyota overhual kit, had extra gaskets that i didnt need (timing, water pump, etc) and had the head rebuilt with a valve job, new seats and the head milled, and bought all the cases of carb cleaner i went through

Lol, jimabena74 - I wish I knew anything about ripping engines apart and putting them back together. I'd save a lot of money!

Hmm... wonder how hard it would be for a newbie to buy a toyota manual, a set of socket tools, and rip apart an engine, .... AND put it back together correctly?!

Probably take me a month or two.. or three, but at least the 4Runner isn't my daily driver.

I got a low milage short block and low milage head from a wrecking yard...(the one I work at of course) replaced all gaskets in the engine, including all the head bolts, and only paid $200 total.....though i did the work myself!

$3000 is way steep! Are they replacing the heads and block in the estimate?????
