3.4 Valve train noise?

I am getting a noise that sounds like it is coming from drivers side of engine when sitting idling at light. Can't really hear it with hood open. It takes about 10-15 minutes of driving before noise becomes apparent. I hear it at idle but when engine is revved over 12-1500 rpm it usually goes away. The noise doesn't seem to increase at same rate as RPM from idle till it goes away. Just over 200k on odometer. Have records for 1st 80,000 miles of changes with conventional oil. Last 120k it has had Mobil 1 changes every 5000 miles. IS it time for valve adjustment?

A valve adjustment wouldn't hurt. My old 3.4 swapped truck had a faint ticking noise at idle. Never knew if it was normal or not, it was the only 3.4 I've heard running.

Sounds like valve adjustment will hurt my wallet. Found similar 4Runner that needs trans might go check it out. If I buy it I'll run mine thru the winter and pull the trans then keep the rest for parts or rebuild trans and figure out how to adjust the valves while I do timing belt.Going to buy stethoscope tomorrow so I can tell if it's coming from under cam cover.

You can check your valves yourself pretty easily with a set of feeler gauges, your have to remove your mech fan and have a wrench that will turn your crank. The FSM will tell you what the clearances should be at certain degrees.

Any chance you took a cam out recently? I unknowingly removed an exhaust cam and didn't know about the sprung gear and that what was causing my valve noise. Once I re-clocked the sprung gear it was all quiet again.

3.4 noise

I haven't touched the engine. I put stethoscope on cam cover. It is quiet except for the rear of cover I hear different noise than any other spot on the cover but it's not same noise I hear inside the vehicle.

Vibration your hear at idle may be the heat shield on the cross over pipe vibrating at low RPM's and when it heats/expands it tightens up.

No clue on the different noise at the rear.
