how can i improve the performance of my 2002 4runner
turbo diesel engine , i am a newbie but i'd like to modify my car
litttle by little, i want to make it faster!

Hey Evelio, glad to see you made it over to the forum.
I'd love to get my hand on a diesel 4Runner!
I'm not exactly sure what you can do under the hood. Do you have a picture of your engine setup?

BTW they have more power than our US gasoline version.....
There's better information on the New Zealand forums about producing more HP.... you could always add a propane injector system.

couple of ideas for you
I don't have a diesel of my own (wish I did...) but here are a few all purpose suggestions. 1)I think K&N makes an airfilter that will fit as a drop in and or a cone style replacement filter. If not check the diameter of the inlet of the intake pipe after the airbox and order one that fits (you will need to do a litle research for this one) 2) Put in a larger diameter exhaust system with a lower back pressure muffler. If you have one of those 'diesel catylitic converters" switch to a free flow type cat. 3) if you don't already have one install an intercooler. 4) if you go off road you could install a snorkel the intake air would be cooler and you might also get a "ram air" effect at highway speeds. Hope these ideas help or at least start some meaningful thoughts aviator

I would recommend and AFE filter over the KN equivelant after looking at oil silicate levels in diesel engines over here. Specifically AFE pro guard 7 over everything else on the market right now... (My gasser 3.slow has a FIPK for the time being...)
The first thing you need to do is get gauges. I CANNOT stress this enought!! Get gauges FIRST. EGT, boost, tranny temp, oil pressure are all vital
Then you can go about trying to get more power, if you mount the pyrometer pre turbine, you dont want EGTs over 1500, if post turbine, no higher than 1200.
You will find that by REMOVING the soot collector (diesel's dont have cats) and switching to a blow through muffler and by stepping up in exhaust size that your EGTs will drop, your boost will come on sooner, and you will have more power across the rpm range.
From there you can play around with increasing boost and adding an intercooler. Try to keep IAT's below 150, pending your compressor wheel and boost settings that may require an intercooler even at stock boost settings.
After that hi pop injectors would be a good change.
All of this basically holds true for our domestic diesels over here (my rents own 3 and it's my general job to keep the 6.5LTD chebby up and running with it's problematic PMD and standyne injector pump...grrrr)
Anyone have any ideas on how I can stuff a i444 navistar 7.3L or cummins 24V in my yota? lol

hey bumpin'! if yer sr5 is a hilux (pick-up) you could flip the drive line around, stuff the engine in the bed and the tank in the front ala VW...
