3.0 Supercharger
This may make me sound like a noob or just an idiot all together, but why will these not work in a runner? http://www.toyotapartsstore.com/prod...roducts_id=791

I'm pretty sure even though it's a 3.0 the engine size is different. Correct me if I'm wrong though.
I think that would be a waste of money though. I'm sure you could swap a 3.4l w/ a TRD supercharger for about the same and get more power with the more effecient engine.

one of the guys that works at the wrecking yards i got to quite often used to work for toyota and was telling me about this supercharge. he said it would work and i would agree since the camrys engine was the same as the runners right? he said the sold very few because of the headgasket issue.

Nope... it's not the same at all. They stopped using the 3VZE in mid '95. That supercharger is for years '97-'01. The camry engine is nothing similar to the 3VZE.

Just because it is a 3.0 liter V6 doesn't mean it is the same as the truck engine. It is an entirely different beast. The displacement is the only common point between the two.

oh ok. he said that a few years ago that toyota made a supercharger for the 3vze and really never sold very many at all due to the head gaskets and stopped making them i guess. thats what he said and i was just passing it along.

I almost had a glimmer of hope about keeping my 3.0 ... until I read this. I don't there is a supercharger that I would want on my slow 3. It's a durable engine when you get past the head gasket replacement.
So ...
I have miles adding on my slow 3 everyda day. And developing three engine alternatives.
Taco / 4runner 3.4 ... most expensive option
Chev 4.3 ... least expensive option
Ford 5.0 ... most fun option
I just received two new books today.
Ford Fuel Injection & Electronic Engine Control by Probst
Chevy TPI Fuel Injection Swappers Guide by Baechtel
Going to educate myself before I decide which option works for me.

I figured the engine wasn't the same just the same size but I wanted to make sure.
I'd love to drop a Mustang 5.0 HO in my lil runner

The more I read about fuel injection the better I feel about making the final decision. I completed the Ford Fuel Injection & Electronic Engine Control book by Charles Probst. Lot's of insights about getting power out of 5.0.
Just started reading Chevy TPI Fuel Injection Swappers Guide. So far I learned that early TPI fuel injection can be modified to produce more power that current Chevy fuel injection. The problem is emissions. My '95 needs a '95 or newer engine. The version of 4.3 I need has a closed-loop fuel injection that works well stock but, no real power gains gad be made without sacrificing reliability. The older later 80's to real early 90's are a good bet to get some real power and still be reliable.
As transmission go I think my 5 speed won't be heavy duty enough to handle the power from either a modified 4.3 or stock 5.0. I have further concerns about the chain driven transfer case and IFS.
I have seen other swaps with 4.3 and 5.0 but, I want reliability and function without having to keep tweaking or fixing it.

You guys witht the 3.0 can still use a supercharger but it needs to be the centrifugal type and not a roots blower like the one made for the 3.4L engine. I am sure if you have a little fab experience you could rig one up quite easily......may cost some $$$$ and will not be some simple kit but I bet you could certainly do it all the same.
Something like this would work well:
Good site for design:

MTL_4runner thanks for the image and link.
I have a question regarding EFI and supercharging?
Air flow would be more.
How will supercharging affect the MAF (MAP) readings?
Does the ECM need to be re-programmed?

Reference this turbo install:
Here is the whole thread for a 3VZ turbo install (should be very similar to what you want!):
A centrifugal supercharger is really just a crankshaft driven turbo anyway.

I am not sure if the ECM can be reprogrammed but I am sure you could add a piggyback computer to the ECM and just bypass it that way.
