3.0 High Idle

Before my rebuild, my engine used to idle a bit low. Not too low, but low enough that it wouldn't quite power my A/C at a stand still. I had no real problem with that but I would have enjoyed a bit higher idle. After my rebuild it seemed to idle just perfect, but it has since climbed to almost 2K! This is driving me nuts and I need it fixed. I have checked the mechanics of the butterfly valve and checked the throttle body. It seems clean and appears to seat fine, but you can make the pully seat the valve just a bit more by applying some pressure. I am not entirely sure about how all this induction works, as I am most familiar with basic carburation and old school engine blocks, so I could use some coaching on what everything is. I have attached an image with some labels:

1. What is this and what does it do?
2. Not sure which this cable is, but I tried moving the mountning nuts down the thread to tighten its pull, but it didn't seem to do much.
3. Correct me if I am wrong, but this should be just the cruise control.
4. Once again... what is this?
5. Throttle cable. Doesn't seem that I could adjust anything there to help.

I would also like to know about the coolant controlled idle passage. I heard one exists in the 3VZE, but I don't know where. I have had his problem with my cold start enrichment valve not turning off. I replaced it with no change in performance. Still runs a bit rich. Could this be the cause for all problems?

Thanks in advance!

Hey, its quite a bit diff from my 91 but I can take a look at my FSM when I get home today, from what I can tell:
1: Don't know...mine doesn't have
2: Not sure again
3:Cruis Control
4: I dont' remember what its called off the top of my head but has somethin to do w/your idle.
5: Throttle Cable
Here's where you adjust the idle, turn it clockwise (screw in) and it will lower...it took me about 3 turns to drop mine from 1300 down to 750-800 ish just go slow and watch the tach.

Will post what else I find out when I get home, hope this helps

I just found out that if I apply preasure to the nut located on the cruise control lever which should close the valve a bit, it returns to a low idle. Now my question stands at how to get it to stay? It would seem that my butterfly valve is not closing all the way and should be cleaned. Does this sound right?

Let me go get it... It should be tight! I tightend it up a bit to try and solve my valve closure problem. I think it is for the auto transmision, though...

Heres the picture:

So what is the best way to insure I have a throttle body that is clean and a butterfly valve that seats well? Or should I just adjust the idle screw and forget about it?

Tried adjusting the screw and it brought it down, but it seems to be running rich and rough at that low of an idle. For now I am going to track down the issue of the valve not closing all the way as it idled great when I pressed on the cruise control lever to close the valave a bit. Any ideas how to get my TB spotless?

take it off, use some TB cleaner and a rag and go at it, it'll take you a good half hours or so but it will be nice and shiny, (take a look at the after cleaning pic in my head rebuild thread) then use some q-tips and clean out some of the ports/holes until its nice and shiny. some of the stuff in there is a pain to get out but just go at it and it'll get nice and clean. It's faster and easier if you spray TB cleaner into the TB rather then onto a rag but you have to take off your TPS in order to do this so you don't screw it up, that means you have a readjust it when you put it on. Either way its up to you, I did mine with the TPS still on and just sprayed the corner of a rag with the TB cleaner, Good luck

If it's running rich, then it's probably a good idea to check out the Ox sensor. Your ECU is set up to fail rich if the Ox sensor goes so that you don't burn a valve from a lean condition.
