3.0 auto troubles

I have been less than pleased with the wifes new rig. Maybe its cause I tried to talk her out of this one but she wanted it.. so now I am stuck with trying to keep it on the road.
Its a 94 4runner 3.0 auto. The auto tranny is electronicly controlled. From a stop it will not always start from 1st.. and while crusing it will sometimes not up shift from 2nd to 3rd....and sometimes it will not up shift to OD.
I thought I would try here ..see if anyone has had this problem... I am thinking 5 speed swap but don't have the energy. Took it to a tech today out of desperation and their responce was .. Its not throwing any codes so it must need a replace/rebuild .. not a bad solinoid etc...
Going to try a manual shift test tonight per the FSM.
How many bannans is this swap? I have pulled and replaced a couple of W-56s..

thanks.

edit.. how do I identify the solenoid wire?
trying to preform manual shift test..

i'd try the code thing again but try pushing the accelerator pedal. That will sometimes start the codes for me. Don't know why but it works sometimes.

ya what babypig said. Also my solenoid code didn't come up until I started fooling with the TPS even though it had been acting up for a while. Go figure.

"it" = tranny

thanks

thanks guys.
I have been searching some more today...thinking of trying to flush the tranny, I drained and filled it but I am reading that it may not be enough. is there a way to flush the auto tranny myself?
I tried the pedel.. no dice.
90 why messing w/ TPS?

It may or may not be related but.. now it will not start when hot.. still no codes.

I wish this thing was a 5sp 22re.

If you type "tranny flush" in the "Search" window it will direct you to a complete write up on how to do it as it is a little too much to go into.

Hot solenoid

Thanks for the help.

I pulled the pan and replaced the filter. I don't think that pan has enough bolts.. they could have squeezed an extra 10 more or so on there..

Anyway while in there I noticed that one of the solenoids is hot.. the weird thing is the truck has been sitting since yesterday. The other solenoids are cold. I wonder if this is what is causing my shifting problem?
The ignition is on for tunes.

BTW no metal in pan or filter, fluid seems ok too.

I am hesitant to button it up with out doing some more invstigating .. I'm going to consult the fsm.. Anybody have an idea how much these solenoids cost?

Today i found a parts store in Vancouver that has a set of #1 & #2 solenoids ,< for A340H > for $225. Toyota OEM are $315 a piece. The truck can sit another couple days whilst i figure that one out... The TPS I replaced just because I could, I found a cheap one used, just to see if the malfunctions in the shifting had to do a flaky unit (apparently not). It was after that when the code 61 came up.

That is strange about the hot solenoid. It must be cold when keys are out no?

Good luck there... I'm trying to find an illustrated manual for this tranny, anybody know any titles?

315 $ ...crap. I was thinking.. how much can a solenoid be? I 'll just buy a new one while the pans off. I guess I'll be putting the pan back on and doing a proper flush and see if that helps. I haven't been under it yet today but I am thinking the solenoid is only hot with ignition on. Someone locally is selling a used tranny t-case for about 200$. I guess that is the next step.. or swap.

Babypig, the $225 quote came from Vancouver Auto Parts on Bridgeport. I said "A340H" and he understood me so I'm assuming they're correct.
...Correct me if i'm wrong, isn't the t-case on these transmissions is part of the unit and can't be separated ? I'm pretty sure about that. I had a tranny tech try to tell me about a seal that could be gone between the two, but then someone on these forums mentioned that they share the fluid. Toyotaj you should identify your trans. There is a blue plate on the case with a set of #s.

You might be better off posting that question in the 86-95 Trucks & 4Runners section here: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116/
