3.0 4runner mileage
Hi all, I just bought a '94 4runner with a brand new 3vze engine. MY stepdad put it in and forgot to put the knock sensor in, and wasnt sure about the vaccum hoses. Right now I am lucky if I get 200 miles per tank. I think I have a 17 gallon tank, which means Im getting about 11 mpg!!! Is the knock sensor responsible for this? I ran a diagnositic and it only pulled up the knock sensor trouble code.
How many miles do you other 3.0 owners get per tank?
As for the vaccum hoses a toyota mechanic told me the 4WD wouldnt work if they were not plugged in the correct places. MY 4WD works, so Im guessing the hoses are good.
The truck has a K&N air intake system and flowmaster exhaust, but the truck is incredibly slow...I have seen more performance from terds being flushed down the toilet.
Please help the NEWBIE!!!!

I was averaging 213 a tank and now that I have moved to flat ground I have gotten 270,but average about 250 now.My knock sensor throws a code once in a great while and runs rough till I shut it off and start it back up then it's fine.I have erased the code and nothing since.

Don't divide by 17 gallons, unless you have stranded and even then you have .5 gallons remaining. Try 14 gallons or 15 gallons which would give you an average of 13/14 MPG.

My 88 4Runner has averaged 20 mpg over the last 5 fillups so I can't complain. But I have a 5 speed and I'll throw it in neutral on downhill areas when I know I'm coming up to a stop sign or light. I think the 2-1/4" cat-back exhaust and free flowing intake helped make a big difference. When I got the truck last year I was getting around 17.5 mpg before any changes.

I looked in my user manual. If my low fuel light does not come on in 1989 4runner, is it a fuse problem or a bulb problem? I could not find a fuse chart in the manual. My 4wd light comes on fine when it's in use. To stay on topic, I drove from Denver to Aspen and back to Glenwood Springs with some detours in between for a total of about 270 miles on one tank.

If you've got a heavy foot and city traffic engineers who own stock in stop light makers, then you aren't far off. If you've got space to cruise and have given up on the 3.slow being a drag racer, then you're on the low side. When my knock sensor went out I did notice a drop in milage, but that could have been caused by the drop in power which resulted in abuse to the LSPOR. Put a new sensor in and get back to us.

I also do not know if the engine even has a knock sensor in it, there is no bridge wire under the plenum, for all I know there could be a big gaping hole in there.
One other thing, is it better to leave the tranny in "normal" or in "ECT" mode? I tried the ECT mode today and seemed to notice a slight increase in performance (nothing to write home about though).

I actually gave up in checking my mileage. I figured: Hey! I know my mileage sucks, why make myself feel bad. I just fill 'er up when my gauge dips a little below the halfway mark, that way I only need to put in about 10 gallons (10 x $2.25 = $20.25). Not a bad price to fill 'er up, heh?
Yes, I know I'm just fooling myself, but just trying not to go crazy and trade in the rig for a Prius or a scooter. :-) just my $.02
