Exclamation 3.0 to 3.4? can i do it

i have a 91 4runner and the engine is almost shot. I get 10 mpg highway and wont hold speed up hills at all. I really dont want to mess with it right now and would rather just try to get a 3.4 from a friend and install it. What I am getting to is, will this just drop right in or do I have to get motor mounts and new trans. Any advice is welcome on the project I am attemting. Your advice would be greatly appreciated.
thanks, Marc

Go search on the Pirate board also. There is a couple post with LOTS of pictures documenting the swap. I have the link on my work computer and will post it tommorow.

If you have a five speed it should be no prob. The fuel lines and exhaust have to be dealt with, but the rest is smooth sailing. If you have an auto, then you got trouble. Currently there is no harness available to splice the new computer to the tranny, which means getting a solder iron and start looking at schematics. Off road solutions is supposedly working on a harness, but i haven't seen it yet.

Yea, but the auto trans only has 3-4 wires to it. A temp sensor, a reverse switch, and the plug that shifts it which may have 2 wires. To me the wiring is the easy part. Here is the post from the Pirate board on a 5 spd.

wow, what an amazing response. thanks a lot for all your suggestions and i will definately look into it. I feel kinda stupid not even looking on this website. I am also considering an chevy small block? Whatever I do I want something with some power. I am sick of being the slowest person on the road.

another thing, I know this sounds stupid but, what is "3VZE" "5VZ-FE" "5VZE"and what do all these mean. Are they basically just engine types. And what do I have in my 91 3.0?

You have the 3VZ-FE. Which is the 3.slow. I have the 5VZ-FE which is the 3.4.

Yes, it has to do with engine family designation.

Just checking.

That's the only time I would trade something in.

Just for the record, the 3VZ-FE is the Camry 3.0 and the 3VZ-E is the 3.slow, if i remember correctly.......

Off Road Solutions will make you a custom wiring harness, all you need to do is tell them what it needs to accomodate, ie; 5spd/auto options, etc... As far as the motor, if your friend has one that's great! otherwise expect to spend at least $2k for a good condition sub 100K miles motor. The motor mounts need tweaking but will work. The main problem as stated is the exhaust routing, on your 3.0 motor the headers tie in on the opposite side of the block as the 3.4. This requires a custom cross-over pipe to be made. If you have an auto trans. you can use the newer auto tranny that comes with the 3.4's. We are in the process of doing this swap in our "new" '89 1st gen. 4Runner 3.sl0w.

No one has mated a stock auto to a 3.4

Several have claimed to, but no one has come across with a solid explanation other than "some mods required"

My understanding is that it is bordering on a physical impossibility.

There is a much simpler solution, use the newer tranny and add a gear drive case or two.

If you 91 is stock, this swap will not at all be worth it. If it is a stocker and you want more power, sell it for a newer rig. If you can afford an engine swap, you can afford a new rig.

I still don't see this as impossible. The actual transmission in the 2nd and 3rd gens are almost identicle. The only difference is the A340F shares fluid with the transfer to engage it. The A340F and A340H should operate the same. Since the 3.4 will bolt directly to the transmission in the 2nd gen this should be an easy swap. In this article http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/autocrawler/ it's noted that the new A340F used the same plugs etc as the original transmission. The only difference was the shift linkgage was a different length. That article has lots of complicated machining to mate an old gear driven transfer case to a new transmission. None of that is needed though as you could keep the original auto transmission with the 3.4. If the 3.0 will work with the A340H, the 3.4 will work with the A340F because it's the SAME transmission. I think this is an easier swap than originally thought. I've crawling under mine and my wifes Runners looking at the transmissions/engines. It even appears the engine to bellhousing has the same pattern except the 3.4 has 1 bolt on the bottom where the 3.0 has 2. If I can find a cheap 3.4 I may try this swap later this summer

Read this:

The valve bodies in the tranny are fundamentally different. The stock auto will not bolt directly to the new engine and there will likely be issues in making them talk to eachother.

This is straight out of Caskey's mouth.

Snag a new tranny, the way all the wiring is point and go. YOu get the beefier gear drive t-case and a chance for duals. Sounds like a good idea.
