2wd tranny on a 4wd truck???

I have a buddy with an 86 reg cab short bed 22r 4x4.

His tranny blew and is looking to replace it. It is just hiss daily Driver so he doesn't need 4wd anymore. Since it is a carbed motor I assume it is the G52 or G54 tranny, How do we tell which it is?

More importantly, he can get his hands on a 4speed tranny out of a reg cab shortbed 89 2wd. He would also be getting the driveshaft with it.

Would this swap work? Anything to be cautious of?

Thanks

My guess is that the bell housing will bolt right up. The biggest problem I see is that you would have to build some sort of new crossmember to support the 2wd tranny since the 4wd crossmember bolts to the t-case.

what about the sensor for the tranny? i mean the speedo cable or whatever it uses?

i know that the 2wd tranny has a speedometer cable on the right side of it.... not sure where is the provision for that on a 4x4....

also the 4 speed from a 2wd might be a w46 (it was in the secodn gen truck anyways)

just get your hands on a '84-88 G52 or G54 tranny. they're less sought after than the W56 so they're usually pretty cheap. i wouldn't bother with all the work involved with installing a 2wd tranny.

cool, good ideas.

I told him just to get the straight replacement, but he can get the 2wd tranny and shaft ultra cheap.

yeah, then comes all the fab work to put in a new crossmember, have the driveshaft cut and resized, and not to mention the fact that he's turned a 4x4 into a 2wd. i thought only chevy guys did that..

Thank You, Seth!

Ya....I have a 94 Yota as well with 4x on it....Its my trail rig so I guess I dont need 4x in my DD...plus Gas milage plus others....its not that I really wanna ditch 4x, it just seems economically fesible at this point in time...I'd rather put the money into the trail rig as it needs it right now to get it ready for thanksgiving trip...

I have talked to a buddy of mine who owns a independent yota shop in SD and he said just bout the same.....he said the two issues would be driveshaft and tranny crossmember....as far as the tranny crossmember, I can fab one up no worries...I built most of what my trail rig is now, so that does not worry me...

My only concern is the cost to have a driveshaft shortened or lengthened...never had this done b4 as the only axle mods I have done have been bolt on (trussed T-100 rear on my trail rig)

I'm picking up the tranny with shifter, driveshaft, and a 43 mm weber carb for 200 bucks from my buddy who had it on his 7 open truck and then did a 350 swap...tranny is supposidly built, but the reason I'm buying this is I cant find one of my trannies for less than 300...

thanks guys

blair

Hey Blair,

why do you need 2 daily drivers?

anyway, if all you're worried about is extending the shaft, I wouldn't stress it.

I had Vista Driveline rebuild my shaft. They do good work and are just around the corner. It wasn't super cheap, but I thought it was reasonable.

They build custom driveshafts and it isn't too expensive if I remember.

Dude, I just saw honda....I was thinking you had a civic or something. I'm not very observant....makes sense now.

What more do you have to do to make it legal for 1450?

Do you have a cage, fuel cell/fuel cut-off, and bucket/harness?

You need coils and a 4 link.....hahahaha

not much else is needed...cage is done fr to back outta 1 1/2" DOM (250 feet)....

just need to plumb cell... been real hard to do as I have 2 functional tanks already

And I have 2 friends from my home town that race 1450....Stock 22re's with arms and spings...'slow but sure' wins the race...they always place top 10....the high hp linked trucks always break... i know cause i go out and tow or fix em...my race truck will chase truck till I do my 3.4 swap, though....damn that 3VZE
