I have a 95 4Runner, 3.0 automatic. I have a question regarding the small two speed pusher fan in front of the AC condenser. The small fan is turned on (low speed) via a relay when the AC is turned on. The question is what triggers the fan to go to high speed through the second relay? Is it a coolant temp sensor, AC system temp sensor, AC system pressure sensor?

I am looking at switching to an electric fan (Taurus fan thanks to all the info here), and if the high speed on the small pusher fan is triggered via a coolant temp sensor, I would like to utilize the same sensor to switch on the replacement fan. Just a personal preference over the sensor placed in the fins of the radiator.

Good question. I was under the impression the pusher fan was 1 speed. I run the taurus fan with the probe through the fins. It has been about a year now with no issues. I installed an aftermarket coolant temp guage/sender so I could better monitor engine temp.

were did you install the sending unit for your aftermarket gauge?

The fan is two speed. High speed is turned on by a pressure sensor. When the system pressure gets too high the fan goes to high speed.

Thank you for the info on the pressure sensor switching the fan to high speed.

Looks like I will need to find a location to add a temp sensor to the block/cooling system. I currently have a switch that opens/closes at 203/185. Any suggestions on where the sensor could be located?

There is a coolant temp switch, only on the 3.0 V6 4WD with auto tranny. It is shown in the centre rear of the engine, probably with the other coolant sensors. It has one pink wire going to it. Looks like it completes a circuit to ground when the temp gets too high and cuts off the a/c.

I bought a guage and sender with metric fittings. The sender goes where the stock one is at the very back/center of the engine. Right at the firewall. You unplug the sensor, and use a 22mm deep socket to get the sender out.

Sorry to bump this old thread, but isnt the Taurus fan a pusher as well?

I was testing mine before install and it appears that if mounted the way others have shown, it will push air form the engine compartment, throught he radiator and out the front of the truck.

I would assume that it would work better if it sucked in cool, new air through the grill (as speed in travelling forces air past the grill anyway) and over the rad into the engine compartment flushing the hot air out.

am I thinking too much? No one else seems to have addressed this, so it may not even be an issue.
