2nd Gen. console cupholder

Has anyone switched out the almost useless tray and coin slots for two or three cup holders? There is plenty of space. The only thing that will get in the way is the rear window control which could be easily put somewhere else. I was actually thinking of putting the window defroster button on the left side of the stearing wheel in one of the unused button locations and put the rearwindow switch in its place. I searched this group and found only 3rd generation folks doing it and running into problems with there "sadan" style E-brake.

I have something in the works. I got cupholder inserts in black that I plan to fit with a little fiberglass work.

Here's the link to the cup holders: http://store.tackletogo.com/thmarflusmou.html

I would really like the ones out of a 2000 Dodge Durango. They work very well. So, if I find one in a junk yard, I should be able to cut it down to size and add fiberglass to shape it, right? Then with a coat of bondo and paint, it should look real good, huh?

I searched the car audio sites for info on fiberglassing. It has been prevalent there for a long time. I used to work with it alot back in the day, but not much in the last 6 years or so.

Do you have a specific question?

Could I use a cutaway of an existing console from another vehicle and add fiberglass to it in order to make it fit my truck? In other words, does it bond easily to the plastics used in consoles?

If you rough up the plastic by sanding it will stick nicely. I have done door panels, dash pieces, consoles, sub boxes, etc. You might have to reinforce the plastic to make it more rigid depending on what console you are grafting in. If the subtrate flexes, it "could" pull away from the fiberglass material. Mechanically fasten, glue or "kitty hair them together before using fiberglass matte.

(flipping through dictonary...)

What's subtrate and kitty hair? Other then that I am all for giving it a try. The only fiberglass work I have done is on body repair of an old spitfire. That and a coat of bondo worked great and was very easy to work with.

Substrate = Console (or whatever you are glassing over)

Kittyhair = bondo with glass strands in it like USC - Duraglas.
