2nd gear has slight grind 96' 4runner. Syncro?
I have a 1996 4runner with the 5vzfe (3.4 liter V6) and 5 spd manual trans. It has 220k miles on it. When I shift from first to second it ALWAYS has a slight grind so matter what strategy I use for shifting, when it is real cold it is obviously worse but even when very hot out it is still there. If I shift very slow it helps make the shift smoother. I realize I have a high mileage rig but all other gears are fine in any direction that you shift (up or down). All fluids are new.
The clutch is brand new OEM installed by a 12 year Toyota mechanic. My whole clutch pedal assembly is new too, OEM. every piece installed by the same guy. I can shift from 3rd 4th 5th to 2nd with no problems usually. Just 1st to 2nd is rough.
Is it my syncros? Is there any way to know for sure what is wrong without opening it up?

What gear oil is in the transmission? Some gear oils, most often a synthetic, can be slippery enough that the synchros have a difficult time bringing the corresponding gear up to speed as you shift. Or the synchro in question could just be excessively worn.

Well, some gear oils meeting the factory spec of GL-4/ GL-5 and 75w90, and usually a synthetic, can still cause grinding when shifting because of their slipperiness.
I've heard of people having issues with Mobil1 75w90, Amsoil 75w90, Royal Purple 75w90, etc.
Redline has their manual trans specific MT-90, which is designed to allow enough friction for the synchros to work.
Amsoil has a manual trans. specific gear oil too, but I haven't personally used that.

I would also bleed the hydraulic clutch actuating system, to make sure there are no air bubbles possibly preventing the clutch from disengaging entirely when you depress the clutch pedal.

hmmm...good Idea. I will have him bleed the clutch again, and Redline is a respectable company. I use their oil in my car. Thank you.
You guys ever heard of GM syncromesh? I have heard great things about the stuff in the World of Honda's.
