285/75R16s (sorry, to beat a dead horse)

okay i have read about this until my brain hurt(only took about two sentences, hahaha), and i have seen some guys that say there will be no problem and some that say it will be a problem to run 285/75R16s without a body lift. So if you guys would humor me, I wanna list exactly what my setup is going to be in the next couple of months.

i am installing:

sonoran 1.1 lift 2" front / 3.5" rear
16x7 Rock Krawler 51 wheels (4.25" back space)
BFG M/Ts 285/75R16 tires(might be swayed to A/Ts, but 90% chance its going to be the M/Ts)

I think those are the only things that can affect the wheel rubbing, but if you need any other info on the mods I am planning, let me know.

Just to throw a loop on it, I need to install the tires on there before the lift. I gotta get her inspected, or face a $250-300 penalty, the OE tires are worn pretty badly. It will ride like that for 2-4 weeks, until I can get time to get the lift installed. How horrible is the rub going to be until the lift is installed?

it will rub like no other from what i hear. i think its a bad idea unless you really wanna hack your fenders when its not needed. assuming you have a 3rd gen runner...

yea that is what I was afraid of. where exactly do you get rubbing problems? only the fenders, or is it hitting suspension parts too?

I have those size tires. You WILL rub. You need your lift 1st. I have a 2.5 inch suspension lift and all I had to do was a little trimming on the plastic inner fender.

Maybe just pick up three used tires and put on the spare? I bought some used tires one time for my old Jeep and they were $20 installed at Big O. Just a thought.

they wont hit your body or suspension set up just your front fender and rnning boards if you still have them on which s suggest takin off. lol

running boards are off, haha. i can only assume they were put on their for soccer mom's, because i don't have problems getting in and out.

anyhow, thanks for the advice guys. i may try to see if i can get some used wheels on the cheap. i have a buddy that might have a spare set i can borrow, but he is a couple of hours away.

anyhow, i will get back to the main part of the question: rubbing after the lift. fdaxe, you just had to trim the fender liner, after lifting it? do you still get rubbing after the trim?

Nope...no rubbin' at all. Not even on full turns. I'm sure every vehicle maybe a little different, but as far as I've heard on here and personal experiance, you should be ok with just a little plastic trimming. It's nothing you really notice as far as looks either.

would less offset help (or is it more offset)? it seems like the majority of the rub problems are caused by the offset of the wheels. On our jeep we used to rub like crazy with 31x10.5 street tires. then we got some of the black cragers with a good offset and 32x11.5 mud tires and there is no rub.

2.5" lift front and rear Tundra/OME setup with two topout spacers in front with mild rubbing at full flex only inside the front fenders could be fixed with a little triming of the plastic.

I test fit 285/70/r17 on a 17x8.5 rim with 4.5" backspacing, 2.5" front lift.
No rubbing on suspension components, but it hammered on the upper joint of my mudflaps and fender plastic when turning. I would've had to remove the flaps and trim tons of plastic from the area to make it work.

Went with 265/70/r17.

Tundra/OME 1 Topout spacer up front 285/75/BFG AT's. No rubbing. I did have a Daystar 2.5 inch spacer lift prior and it barely rubbed. I had to trim the inside of the running boards "Limited" about .5 inch.

What is the offset of those wheels?

I can't remember I think they are 4.5" someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

thanks for the info guys. so basically i should be able to get away with the setup, but will likely have to trim a little plastic.

BTW, those are some nice looking rigs guys.

How is the ride with the Tundra/OME setup?

I was thinking of that setup which is the Sonoran Steel 1 or maybe doing the Sonoran Steel 7.

How much did buying the parts yourself cost you? I noticed that there were some custom parts that he fabricated. Where you able to buy it from him or you find some substitute. More specifically i was looking at the Land cruiser to 4runner rear shock disk and the Bamachem 3/8 thick: 1/2 lift HDPE Top Spacer.

I am looking at getting this soon.

Chances are good that the shoulder lugs of the M/T's would rub on the upper a arm.
