285/75/16 vs. 255/85/16??

With my current set up I run 265/75/16's on stock wheels. I have a little over 2" of lift in front and a little over 2 1/2" in the rear. I want to go to a bigger tire but from what ive heard here on the board 285's will rub for sure and require a body lift. I was wondering if anyone has run the 255/85/16 bfg m/t's and If they fit in smaller applications vs. the 285/75/16. From the bfg website the 255/85/16's seem to be a tiny bit taller then the 285's but are more than an inch less in width. Any info would be great. And any pics of 3rd gen 4runners with these tires would be cool as well.
Thanks

If you want to try a set of 285's come by some day and we'll swap mine on to yours so you can see if they rub.

You might be ok onroad, but offroad you'll rub the backside of the front wheelwells for sure with either tire.

That is correct. It's the A arm actualy. Go with the 285's. Iv'e been slightly rubbing my A-Arms with 285's for over 2 years and 40K miles with no concequenses or issues.

When mine was lifted, I didn't encounter any problems with rubbing with 285s. But then again, I never really abused it off-road either. I did have to trim my valence a tad, but maybe its because I have an aftermarket one.

It depends on how much stuff your springs will provide and how you wheel.

I can stuff my tires till the bump stops compress and droop until the ball joint hits the coil. Pretty much the maximum articulation from stock A arms.

I have a set of Cooper Discoverer STTs in my garage just itching to be mounted on my old rims. They are 255/85/16. I bought those so that I could run a set of chains all the way around without ripping my A-arms apart. I can't run chains on my 285s. not enough room.
