285/75-16 MT/Rs on Stock 5 spoke rims

First off, I have searched, and my question pertains specifically to the Goodyear MT/R in the 285/75-16 size. I am running 3" of OME lift front and rear, and have run both Cooper and now "defunct" Dayton tires in the same size with no issues. I have now purchased a set of MT/R's for my rig, and have looked at the sidewall and have some concerns about contact with the UCA's (also stock). I took the opportunity to bolt them up to my truck today, and it looked good BUT the backspacing is different on his rims.

Has anyone run the 285/75-16 MT/R's (kevlar) on stock 4Runner rims, and if so, how much of a spacer was required to clear the stock UCA? I have 1/4 inch wheel spacers ordered, as the one and only post I found on this topic (I've searched the 3rd gen specific threads for the past 4 days to no avail) said that 1/4" would clear, but more than one person's experience would inspire some confidence. Any knowledge will be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to have to post, but I have to study for an upcoming, rest-of-my-life-determining exam (no seriously). Again, thanks!

um my personal experience with mounting that big of a tire on a 7 inch rim is never good. i was a manager for discount tire co. for about 9 years and with that said go with a wider wheel first off. as far as spacer goes i guess it depends on the setup. i have never been a beliver on them but with the right kind i guess its all good. you are going to have a ruff ride no matter what you do with that tire but with that size on that rim def not wide enough. just my opinion so take it for what its worth!

Thank you for the input! This will be my 3rd set of 285's on these rims, and this is a holdover until my further plans can come to fruition.

Put 39.5 x 13.59s on a 15x8 rim no sweat even aired down to 3 psi.

Your problem is two fold, wide tire and OEM backspacing.

Either wheel spacers or rims with less BS.

Grumpy old men!

First off never apologize for posting if you did searching before hand, don't let grumpy old timers make you feel bad because if nobody posted this site would go under.

As far as your topic goes i'd say that different tire makes will have different side wall behaviors. Some may give more than others depending on the side wall construction and strength. Your other two sets may have had less sag with the side walls and these MT/R's may be more forgiving and balloon out causing rubbing or near rubbing at your UCA's.

Maybe if you want to keep the factory wheels you should ditch the MTR's and go back to the other brand tires that worked or at least the brand tire in a MT tread. I just don't like spacers all that much.

Good luck either way!

Thanks for the input guys. I am beginning to get the notion that many people haven't gone this route, probably for this reason. I don't plan on driving my 4Runner daily for long, and just need to get thru to November or December with it, at which point I will park it and purchase a 2nd gen Tacoma for a daily driver. There's some work that needs to be done on my 4Runner that's going to require time and pulling the motor, and all I am looking to do is get enough rubber under it to make it that long.

So, the quick and dirty is that I have the tires, just need to make them fit well enough to get me around to the end of the year, on the cheap.

As with all of my previous experiences, you guys are great. I am more than glad to know that there is a community out here that is willing to help, and has a general atmosphere of caring for others. Thanks again!

Are you pulling the engine to rebuild it or to paint your 4runner?

I'm going to end up rebuilding or replacing the engine. I've got an oil leak, and I've already done the rear main seal, and I'm getting some seepage from the oil pan gasket, and one of the bolts for the oil pan broke off in the block, minor stuff, but it's pushing 250,000 miles, so it's needing some love. It needs attention a little bit of everywhere, but nothing major. I figure that if you have to pull the engine to work on it, you might as well freshen it up or make it better before you put it back.
