what's the size difference between 265/75's and 31x10.5's? i read that the 31's would be the largest i could run on my stock tacoma but i'm currently running 265/75R15. is there a significant difference in tire size?

The 31x10.5's are 1-1.5" wider, providing they do measure 10.5".

265's are 9-9.5" wide.

265/75r16 is 10.5 inches according to most manufacturers specs. They are also 31.8 inches tall so they are the same height as a 32x11.50 without the wider tire bulge. That is what I'm mounting on the new 16x7 wheels that came in yesterday.

265/70r16 is 30.7 inches tall and 10.5 inches wide just like a 31x10.5 . If you do go for a 16" wheel maybe you should consider the taller tire as it will increase ground clearance.

That's the problem with manufacturers specs. They're hardly accurate at times. Does the 4Runner's published ground clearance specs ring a bell?

My stock 265 Bridgestones are about 9" wide as well as my old 265 MT/R's. 265/75 MT/R's are 31" unmounted and sit at 30" on the truck, though they always measure small anyway. I believe BFG's are closer to matching the listed height.

I believe 285 MT/R's are 10.5" although I haven't measured them yet for some reason (I should have known such a post was coming). 285's are generally accepted to be 11.5" wide, but if you compare them to a 32x11.5, they aren't near as wide.

I agree. That and the fact that a wider tire measuredment at the bulge doesn't equate to wider tread compounds the problem. Not too many shops will mount up a tire to let you look at it though but I know my 31x10.50's are narrower than spec also.

why the size numbering difference, if basically a 265/75 is the same as 32x10.5? and if a 265/75 is the same as a 32x10.5 then that's already larger then what i read as the 'recommended' maximum. yet this is what came on my truck from the dealer.

what would be the largest tire to put on a stock 98 tacoma then?


is there some reason why tire manuafacurers have differenct systems?

If you have 16" wheels you can fit 265/75r16. If you have 15" wheels you can fit a 32x11.50. The wider 11.50 tire may rub at full wheel lock.

Larger than what is recommended? Isn't that the point with 4wheeling? You need more ground clearance to prevent damage to the truck. If you don't offroad much then don't worry about oversized tires.

A buddy of mine has 33 x 9.5's & they are significantly more narrow than my 265/75R16's.

Hate to resurrect an ancient thread, but I just got back from trying to get Walmart to put on the Wrangler Authorities I bought through their website for my 2004 Colorado. My truck originally came with 265/75/15s and Walmart WOULD NOT put the 31/10.5/15's on my truck. I argued, screamed, and no one would believe that the two tires sizes are basically the same.

Ya, Walmart has a policy of not putting anything but factory sizes on vehicles for liability reasons, they have been doing that forever, arguing and screaming at someone else's business is like a kid having a temper tantrum, go somewhere else. Interesting you joined this club, to resurrect this thread from 2003, to discuss tires for a Colorado.

I have been using Walmart for many years and this is the first time they ever said anything. I have been going back and forth changing out 31/10.5 Duratracs and the 225/75 Wranglers. I have bought 31's from them years ago and there wasn't a problem. 31's are almost exactly the same as 265/75 and actually were the original equipment on my truck.

Well they go by the vehicles door for tire recommendations for liability reasons as there policy, end of story, complain all you want they don't care or need the work, go elsewhere.
