Doesn't sound too bad. Perhaps time for new valve seals? I've heard 1 qt every 3-5000 miles is normal.

Does it burn or does it leak?
What kind of oil?
What viscosity?

With the heat about to come to AZ you might want think about 10w-40 (assuming you are using 10w-30). It might burn a little less-if you are burning. On the other hand since it started using oil 50,000 miles ago you should have some drip marks to show where its leaking.

Nope, no leaks, drips or oozes and really doesn't smoke. I bought it new (and glad I did) as the 3rd gens were coming out so it had been on the dealer lot a while. It only had 17mls. I noticed when I bought it it was pingy. I read that dealers will idle the car for long periods in order to charge the battteries and this may warp the valves. I took it in and the dealer said it was okay -- what else. I just add a quart half way before time for an oil change and it is fine. I haven't noticed oil weight or driving conditions has made a difference, it justs burns a quart in 2500mls. Haven't had any work on it either. It keeps ticking, doing duty, five people and five packs, four chicks and a tent, shuttling eight four wheeling- done every dirt road. Man its an awesome vehicle.

I think 10w40 would help.

I agree on the 40W. Here in El Paso, it's getting warm enough that my oil pressure has been dropping pretty low when idling. During the summer I'll run 15W-40 or 15W-50. Of course this drops my mpg down a little.

You might try going to Target and picking up some Mobile 1 for older vehicles and run it through a couple of changes and see if it affects your consumption. First time I put it in, it used a quart in about 1 thousand miles, but since then no usage at all. I think it cleaned a lot of the crud out of the crankcase, rings, galleys etc. that had been left there by the Castrol Syntec I used to use.

Also, 1 quart every 2500 isn't bad at all. You can live with it easily.

I thought my oil pressure was a little low too lately. Last year I kept topping off with 5w40 Delvac that I normally use for my wife's car and noticed a great increase in oil pressure.

Yeah I love it and will continue to live with it. I have not used any oil additives, but sounds like it is time to try some. Living in the desert I have run 20W-50 weight a lot. I ran it more often years ago when I changed the oil myself, but havin it done lately. Hmm... stumps me that nobody else is burning like that. Have you had the vavle clearances adjusted on yours?

Don't worry about putting in any additives. Most of what is in the additives is already in the oil. Try what gwhayduke said and use the oil for higher mile cars.

From your earlier post you sometimes carry a heavy load and it might get a bit dusty and HOT in AZ so you might want to change your oil a little more often. I tow a bit and it does get warm here in the NW corner of La. so I change about 3000 mi. The book say's I can go till 3,750 but why take any chances. (95 with 93k and no leaks)

Just make sure before it starts to get cold to swich to the thinner oil...

YIKES!!!! descendents If I were you I would want to change that oil and filter pretty quick. Even though you put in 3 quarts of new oil you only had about 2 quarts holding all the trash that 4.5-5 quarts would hold. (assuming its been a while since you changed your oil, and your oil filter is in bypass mode.) Your engine will thank you!!! (I would probably do the change after this one earlier as well) Good luck and I hope you caught it in time!!

Dad and I always worked on antique cars...he had a 31Pontiac. Anyway the family doctor had an old MGA he wanted us to fix up. So we ran up to Larned (KS), picked it up and brought it home. On the way back we took the Garfield oil road...lots of curves, downshifting, etc. We got it home, drained the oil and about 2 qts drained out. The old MG never complained a bit.

By the way, it was one of the most memorable cars in my past. Love those 1950's sportscar curves.

My 2nd Gen V6 Runner started using oil at about 150,000....about 1 qt in 2000 miles. I now have about 161,000 and have no problems....just the consumption of the oil. I use 10-30W Mobil 1 synthetic....I have used it for years. My vehicle doesn't smoke or leak at all. It still pulls as strong as ever. I did add some Restore Engine Restorer, which is added to the oil, and have noticed a drop in the consumption.....it still consumes some oil but not as much as before.....it now is using about 1qt in 4000 miles. I change the synthetic oil every 6000 miles.

I used to never believe in adding any additives to my Toyota....I used the Restore when I had my Jeep CJ and it fixed the severe blow-by in that engine at about 170,000. I buckled and added it to my Runner's engine and it seemed to help it too.

ya its back to running great and no clanking sound, it had only been like a a month or two since my last oil change and somehow it had burned like 3+ quarts... well ill just check it every week and see how things go. i should probably switch to 10w40 or 20w50 for this az summer heat
