Question 22RET internals vs. 22RE internals

What differences are there in the internals of a stock 22RET compared to a stock 22RE? Thanks.

I'd bet they're the same as 22RE rods. I'm not for sure, though

I'm planning on converting my 22RE to a 22RET and I was curious to what the internal differences were between the two engines. If it's just the pistons, I'm in good shape.

From what I know, I doubt it. I'm looking to strengthening the internals as so they can handle the turbocharger. But just strengthening won't produce more power.

Do you mean without a turbo? You'd actually turn out less power, as the turbo pistons are a lower compression.

I think that converting a 22RE to a 22RET would be way too much effort for the gain it would provide. Besides the internal engine parts, you're going to need a turbo, the computer, wiring, and all that crap. The toyota turbo sucks anyway, from what I've read; you'd probably want to swap in a better turbo while you're at it. Why not just go all out and put a Chevy 4.3 in there, if more power is what you're looking for?

I've been thinking about putting a chevy 350 in but I have no clue what goes into the process.

Has anyone done this before? Thanks.

A 350 might be a little big. I think they are too long to put under the hood. I know it can be done, but the 4.3 seems to be a lot more common. Plus, a 350 may tear stuff up that a 4.3 wouldn't. This is from pirate: http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=293888 ; it's a little helpful for the 4.3 swap.

I dunno. Would a 4.3 swap be easier than a turbo converison? I would be running low boost, like 4-6. Would I have to do much more work, like higher cc injectors, fuel and ignition managment, etc?

Well, a 4.3 will make more easy power than a turbo'd 22RE. Any sort of engine swap is going to be a pain in the ass. If you're looking for power, I don't think you're ever going to be happy with a 22RE. You could just tell yourself, "I drive a Toyota pickup, I'm not looking for power" and be happy with the gas mileage. If you want a 350, you might as well get an old Camaro; they are cooler than a Toyota. That's how I look at it anyway.

I kinda inherited the Toyota from my father, who received it from his father. So I didn't really get to choose to drive the pickup. (Not that I don't love the truck, but of course I would of chosen an old Camero. I love the classic american muscle cars.) I'm not an off roader so I'm trying to go the street route. I'm probably one of the youngest members on YotaTech (16) and most of my friends drive the import tuners. Though my pickup does hang with the best of them. I know the 22RE isn't going to be running a 10 sec 1/4, but I'd like to squeeze as much power out of it as possible. Thanks for the replies.

Aw heck, I'd take my yota over a Camaro any day. I'll bet you can come up with more fun stuff to spend money on than a engine swap or turbocharging a 22RE. On the engine swap issue though, I wonder how hard it would be to put V6 motor mounts in and swap in a toyota 3.4? That may (or may not) be easier/cheaper than a chevy swap.

Here is a cut and paste from the RTE guys at the yahoo group. I am in the process of building a RTE engine. I am swapping in a CT26 turbo(Supra/MR2). Once you make the holes longer in the manifold, it bolts right up. You would need a custom downpipe though.
The head is different on the turbo. Alot of guys put a RE head on their RTE to bump up compression and make a little better low end power.

The Exhaust manifold is different, of course.

The Air Intake Tube (from turbo to throttle body) is different.

The Throttle body (upper intake assembly) is different.

The Pistons are different (dished).

The clutch is different, heavy duty.

The radiator is different (port added for turbo cooling on top).

The Block is different (ports added for oil pressure and return
lines, although some 22RE blocks may be modified to be used on turbo).

The lower radiator hose assembly has been changed, the turbo has a 2
piece hose (the main large hoses, there are also smaller hoses on the
turbo) to accommodate the turbo cooling.

The gasket set is different.

-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-

Some similar items are:

The camshaft is the same.

The piston rods are the same.

The water pump is the same.

The crankshaft is the same.

The alternator power steering and AC compressor and mounting brackets
are the same.

The upper radiator hose is the same.

By the way it is RTE, not RET..

Just curious. How many 22RET Pickups where made? And if you know the Years that go alone with that would be awesome.

Thanks for the reply, very helpful. The 22RE and RTE arn't as identical as I thought.

Just swap in a 7mgte supra engine with a few mods, you'll be able to take any of your buddies if you ever hook up .
