Well, my lovely new Gen one has been knocking a bit, and the clutch was fried... so off to the shop it went and today I got back some bad news... one of my Rod bearing's is going out... simple enough, but the guy working on the clutch said it would run about 4G's for motor Rebuild all out...don't have that cash... My question is, how hard will it be to repplace the bloody rod bearings and would I be ahead with a 200k motor to just have the new motor droped in or is a rebuild kit a good option?

I'm looking for some bumpers cause my back one is torched and the front one well, it's stock so you can see where that just won't fly... I like the look of the rear Kenesaw Multi-carier... but for the front I'd like to go with something more pre-runnerish, I'm not a big fan of the ARB bull bars cause of the reduced approach angle and general heft that I'll be hauling around with the ol 22RE (or maybe not eh).. so what are some good Toyota Front Bumper manu's???

Edit - I've been told that if I baby the bloody thing I can still drive it with the bearing going out, that's what I expected, so that's OK, but I guess I'm kind of looking for a new motor... the rebuild id 4G's, so anyone know where to find maybe say a 22RTE? and can my running gear handle an RTE? or am I looking at a catastrophic failure if I go this route? ANy 22RE's out there?

You can find a rebuilt long block for around $1800 used for $500-1000. Look for them on the net. The 22rte swap is going to cost you more than a rebuild. You have to change harness and cpu and tranny and add other stuff. I have no idea about just replacing the bearings, i am actually thinking about that my self to buy time to rebuild the spare i have.

If you have something else to drive while you do it, i would pull and rebuild the motor yourself. They are easy rebuilds in a garage with relatively bassic hand tools, and the kits are cheap.

$4K is quite steep.

$4,000 is a bit excessive for a 22RTE when you could cheaply order a kit from www.engnbldr.com and easily do it yourself without even having to take the engine out of the truck.

4K is high.
but the problem with replacing just the rod bearings is that odds are that other bearings are about to give you some serious grief. whatever caused the rod bearing to go may have caused other problems. you go through all that work and 6 months down the road you're doing it again.
we all know 200K isn't unusual for these vehicles. but it's seldom a good idea to piecemeal any motor at this point. save your pennys, do it yourself or get some more advice from the group--they might know someone who can cut you a deal.

Take the bottom end to a machine shop and have it rebuilt and then drop some $ into a nice performance head of some sort and you'll be good to go for MUCH less.
There was a factory new 22re short block on sale on Pirate4x4.com. Guy wanted $1200 for a factory new short block, not a rebuild.
Definitely something you can do for much less than $4k.

DIY is the way forward! The knowledge and information to do this job is at your fingertips
