22re Milage?
If there are any 4x's with the classic 22re motor, i'd like to know how you compare to mine. i get an average of 20mpg with mixed city hwy. i've clocked 180k on stock everything(e.g. gears, motor, everything). i've got a heavy lumberrack, campershell and roll on 31in. bfg's. i accelerate slow and cruise around 65 avg. on hwy.
do you get better/worse? how? and on what kinda setup? thanks

I get about the same, corrected for tire size; but I have the 22R, carburated older brother of the 22RE motor. Camper shell a bunch, of tools and equipment, 130 pounds of winch and bumper up front, 32x11.5 tires.
Since the speedometer and odometer info come from the transmition don't forget to correct for bigger tires and differential ratio changes or lack thereof. If your truck came with 28" stock tires and you put on 31s without changing gears your Speedo and odometer instantly reads 10% low. 20 MPG is really 22 and 60 MPH is really 66.

Corrected for the 31's I get about 18-19 in mixed, 2WD driving.
The PO wasn't driving it much in the last year though so I suspect it will improve a bit. Plus I have AMSOIL gear oil ready to put in the diffs, trans and transfer case. Tha tshould smooth things out even more.
I'll be very happy with 20mpg. My old, poorly-running Trooper never broke 15mpg.

I've been driving conservatively due to gas prices and have been squeezing out 21-22 mpg. Truck has 32's w/ 4.88's and fairly heavy bumpers. I emptied out my bed mounted toolbox and took out my spare tire to remove excess weight.

I've got a 95 runner, 22RE..with a few mods. My cam isn't yet dialed in..pissin me off....but I have gotten 23 with the cam, and as low as 11 when the swampers are on and I try to cruise at 70-75. My speedo is corrected for 33's..but the TSL's are so friggin big its like 4% off my street tires..I seem to get 15 arounds town and 16-17 on the hwy, but I drive fast and hard..I weighed my rig last week and with just my daily driving stuff it was over 4600 lbs. So its heavy for the 22RE. I've re greared, but am not shy on pushing my pedal.
I think when I get the cam dialed in I will run a bit more efficanlty.

22re gas mileage
Hey epic....
I have a 1986 4x4 sr5 longbed (now flatbed) (180k) and a 1987 Runner (144K) both with 5spds and 22re's.
On the 1986 4x4 I get 19 MPG uncorrected due to 235x17x15's (stock = 225x75x14). If I drive it crazy like I tend to do most of the time 17-18. Corrected it would problebly by 20-21.
My 1987 Runner with stock 225x75x15's gets 20-22 MPG. It feels as if the gearing isnt as low in the RUNNER as the truck is.
I vote this motor as the most reliable in the world!
I still run my flatbed on the interstate with the speedometer at 85 which equates to about 91 Miles perhour. Solid as a rock! I had to replace the head a while back and it was actually a 22r head. They shaved the head and rebuilt it too. I swear the thing has more pep then ever. It runs better then my 1987 and has roughly 40K more miles on it.
I will have owned this truck 10 years in april, thats 1/3 of my life. I just cant seem to part with it. There is some cancer starting in various spots and the bed was ripped off back in 2000 for a HEAVY (400-600lb) flatbed built by my father in law. The cancer claimed my LONGBED
Any how the utility is much better with the flatbed and the truck doesnt bounce around as much.

As I understand it, a 20R head on a 22R block WILL increase power due to the crossflow (I think) design of the 20R head....if mine ever goes I will probably upgrade to a 20R head as well.
