Question .::22R-E Running Very Rough Under Load::.

My friends 1986 Toyota FourRunner with the 2.4L 22R-E engine is running very rough under load. It has 130,000 miles, no rebuild, automatic transmission.

Symtoms: it idled rough, not to the point that it would die, but noticably rough. Once you put it in gear, the RPM's take a major dip and the engine nearly dies (occasionally will die) and once you go to accelerate it would bog like a bitch until it gets into the upper RPM range. It got to the point that the car would not even reach its maximum RPM potential in 1st gear.... It apparently got progessively worse to this point.

He had been running it with NO water in his radiator overflow tank, so I filled it up, changed the plug wires (original wires!), plugs, airfilter, and put in a bottle of STP injector cleaner.

So we fired it up, seemed to be running 101% better, until we put it in gear... Same RPM drop, same bogging and juttering off the line, but it was definatly better. The car is drivable, but can hardly get up to speed in the time it needs to.

I am pretty stumped at this point, but I am guessing its the injectors.... What do you all think ?

Thanks for your time,

You might want to pull the codes and see what comes up first.

Smile

Yeah, thats probably the best thing to do at this point... Not much more at "do it at home" things to check...

Thanks

If the codes read fine I would check the timing next.
