i did some searching on this topic, but most of the info i found was for newer trucks.

i'm looking to upgrade the alt in my '84 4runner. it has a pitiful 40 amp alt now, so even a 90 amp would be a huge upgrade. i have considered buying a HO alt for $200-$300, but i'd like to avoid that if possible. i dont have a huge stereo system, so i really dont need a 200 amp alt.

are there any alternators from other cars/trucks that i can swap into my 4runner. i think i read somewher that the '91-'95 MR2 alternator will fit with a little work. anyone have anymore ideas or experience? perhaps a small body GMC or something? how difficult is the process and how much $ would i be looking at to pull one from a junk yard?

see if you can pm or get ahold of (username)getitdone. he sucessfully did a stock-to-gm 140 amp, if that sounds ok... and he got it cheap, too. i dunno if that amperage is appealing to you, but he did it all himself... fabricated a mounting bracket and all with no problem.
so get ahold of getitdone.

holy cow. that's an outstanding writeup. thank you. Al Dolney's 4runner is an '85, but it's probably the same for the '84, huh?

i figure after shipping and misc adapter parts, I'll probably be looking at $200 plus a lot of labor. Anyone know of anything in this price range or something that will bolt on without requiring welding?

he did it on an '85 runner, bone-stock, with the infamous 22RE if you were wondering.

Al's writeup is awsome. I did it and can't be happier. I don't even have any accessories to take advantage of it yet, but it works well. If you email him, he will help you with any problems you encounter. He is an awsome guy. I am pretty sure it will work for your truck although I do know there is a difference between the electronics on an 85 and an 84. I think the repair manuel explains it. Check it out.

140amp alternator is exactly what i'm looking for. getitdone, what was your final cost after mounting parts and everything? did you get a new alt or a used one? did you have to do much welding? thanks for the help.
