20R with 22R head swapped with a 22RE?
ok, so my 85 22RE has a HG leak. this dude has a 20R which has been totally rebuilt, bored out, has a 22R head on it. he says he can swap my engine with it and use my intake and it should all bolt up and work perfect.
he seems to be well versed about the toyota engines, but i need to confirm it from you YT experts. will my fuel injected intake system work with the 20R? the rebuilt motor has about 10k on it.
any issues come to mind?

its a 20R block, bored out 0.03, chevy engine pistons (dont know what kind, but flat-top), 22R head (round exhaust and round intake ports), and he says that he can use my intake (85 22RE) and it will bolt right up. i believe the block is from a 84, but i dont know what year the head is from.
oh yes, he also mentioned, when he was running this engine, he was using dual carbs and getting tons of power out of it. it has a low-end camshaft installed on it and claims that i will get upwards of 160hp...

The only problem I can forsee would have to do with deck height. As Engnblder explained to me when I picked up my rebuilt 20r head, the difference in the block height from the early 22r to the later 22r (or 'laser' block) was all about hood clearance. In 85 the slope of the hood changed and was found to interfere with the engine.
Toyota's answer? Deck the block and shorten the timing chain by two(?) links.
If you have an 85 and you put an early 22r or 20r into the bay you will have to releive the hood clearance some how.

sounds like one serious mutant engine
not sure about the pistons -- i know 20R engines had pistons that were flat tops with a slightly raised dome on them, not like the big volcano looking thing that early 22R pistons have.
if it's got round intake ports, it's a 20R. 22R engines all had square ports. unfortunately if it's a 20R head you can't bolt your EFI parts on to it, at least without some serious fabrication. it has been done, but i don't think it'd be worth it for most people. it's really more of a modification for the celica guys.
i'd double check this thing. start off by looking on the driver's side to identify the block. there'll be a little machined spot where the engine code is stamped. it'll say either 20R or 22R. if it is a 22R, check for a flying saucer shape on the passenger side, if it has this mark it's an '85 or newer block, if it lacks it, it's an '81 or older.
to ID the head, a '75-78 20R head will lack the fuel pump mount on the front passenger side of the head. in fact, the intake manifold will probably go almost all the way to the front of the head. however, if it's got a '79-80 20R head, or a 22R head it'll have the fuel pump mount and front power steering mount hole. if you spot that feature, you'll need to look at the intake and exhaust ports. round intake ports indicate a 20R, square indicates a 22R. a 20R or early 22R will have round exhaust ports while the late 22R will have pear shaped ports.
in closing, this might not the be the engine for you if you're looking to stay EFI. you CAN run an '83-84(these were compatible with the EFI intake) 22R head on a 20R block but you'll probably lose some compression. however you'd have to come up with provisions for a knock sensor. you would gain a dual row timing chain, though

well to be completely honest i'm not certain about the '89-95 trucks -- could be wrong there. remember, the '84-88 trucks all have that power bulge in the hood where the engine is, though

i know for a fact its a 20R block. he has 2 heads, one has polished square intake/exhaust, the other has round intake/exhaust. neither will work with my EFI? if not, what option do i have for my intake? buy one form a junkyard? what year?
he also said to put a 20R head on a 22R, it increases compression and you would need to run premium fuel... dont know if thats right, im just repeating what he said.

looks like i am going to have to use my head (given that its not warped or cracked) with the 20R block so that the intake and exhaust bolt up and dont cause any interference in the air flow. would i need a head gasket set for a 85 22RE or a 20R?

spoke to Ted (engnbldr), he said with the 20R block and a 84 22R head, i should have no problems and i can use the intake from my 85 on it with no problems. only thing is that i have to get a exhaust gasket cuz the head gasket set that i bought from him for my 85 22RE has a different exhaust gasket in it. i have the option of using a 20R head (round intake/exhaust) or a 22R head (square intake/round exhaust). the 22RE head from my 85 will not work, the pistons will just hit the head and have not enough clearance, the engine wont turn over. i guess im going to go with the 20R block, 22R head and my EFI intake.
i really want to carb it for some more power, probably have to change the fuel pump, would i have to change anything else out if i carb it?
