2006 HP reduction

I am looking into new runners, and test drove an '06 today. I noticed the HP has been reduced on both the V8 and V6 models. What the hell is that crap? Has anyone else noticed this? I am going to buy the V8, but am little torqued they reduced the HP from 273 to 260. I tow a lot and want every bit of power I can get.

Anyone know why this happened?

Nothing on the engines has changed, they changed the standards for the testing. I was a little upset at first, but it is still the same, just a different way of measuring.

This seems a little weird that they "measure" hp differently. I don't know about the new runners but some car companies tune cars down for less power and better gas mileage. This maybe what Toyota did so that they can sell more runners.

Honda does the same thing and you can get a reflash of your ECU to get an extra 30 horsepower in some situations.

Rivalred has it right.

Most Jap cars lost a few ponies, nothing too bad. Rated hp means nothing anyway, it's what you put down at the wheels that matters.

But good looking crank numbers sell more cars.

I don't know the precise ins and out of it, but much like Europeans carmakers rate their cars in bhp in Europe (brake horsepower) and crank hp in the US, there are different ways to measure this.

That V8 is awesome! Overkill in a 4Runner IMO unless you do do a lot of highway driving with a heavy load--personally I would prefer the 4.0 V6 and the 6 speed manual.
The I-Force with variable timing! 4.7 V8. I have a new Tundra that I bought for my DD and tow my 4Runner on a trailer with it--13,500 pounds or so-- and that motor just pulls awesome! It likes to rev too and still gets good mileage.

13,500lbs? Does the trailer have other stuff on it or does it weigh over 9000lbs?

I was thinking the same thing. I towed a full sized triple axle steel trailer and a fullsize military HUMVEE and it only weighed 10.000lbs.

What the hell kind of trailer are you running?

HAHAHAHA... Well there's only 2 worthwhile ways of rating HP... At the crank or better yet, at the Wheels... but changing between the two will have NOTHING... repeat NOTHING to do with the output of the motor it's self...

Yeah 13,000 lb towing eh? Is that like your truck your 4runner and your trailer on the scale together? Cause 13000lb is somehting reserved for Cummins motors as far as I'm concerned (yes, Cummins only, SHivy and FFFFFFoooooooord can play a game of Hide and GO F#$% themselves)

13k worth of trailer? Right. A 4Runner on a 7k# trailer would weight in at about 6500 pounds if I were to guess. In addition, a Tundra would burst into flames before it got a 13k pound load up to 15 mph.

just my business self coming out. i work in a rental yard, i deal with a lot of morons that scoff at me when i tell them they can't pull certain pieces of our equipment. "i tow 15k with my 3/4 ton all the time!"

Folks:

There is no difference in the engine itself. The only thing that changed was the test that determines the HP rating. The ratings body, SAE, realized that the testing method for HP did not specify some of the things that it should have specified. For example, there are a number of HP-robbing accessories that are attached to an engine -- alternator, AC compressor, etc. Should these be attached to the engine while doing the HP rating test or not? The previous SAE test did not specify, so some manufacturers had them attached and some did not.

The new SAE test specifies which things must be attached while testing the engine for HP rating. The net result is that the HP rating of many engines changed, even the there was no change in the engine or vehicle.

In other words, nothing for you to see here, move along.

f350 dualie w/ powerstroke- 15000 lbs
silverado 2500HD 2WD- 16100
ram 3500 st 4x4- 13850 standard, 16000 when properly equipped (whatever that means)

so it looks like all three are more than qualified. plus 4wheeler magazine named the f350 the towing king
